Netanyahu gets it

“Militant Islam’s ambition to dominate the world seems mad, but so too did the global ambitions of another fanatic ideology that swept into power eight decades ago.  The Nazi’s believed in a master race.  The militant Islamists believe in a master faith. They just disagree who among them will be the master of the master faith.”

So said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking to an audience of less than half of the UN representation this morning.  I’m highlighting it here because I’m sure many of you didn’t hear it.

“There is one place where that could happen,” he said, “the Islamic State of Iran. For 35 years, Iran has relentlessly pursued the global mission which was set forth by its founding ruler, Ayatollah Khomeini, in these words. ‘We will export our revolution to the entire world until the cry –there is no god but Allah – will echo throughout the world over.’ “

Netanyahu also reminded the audience that it was Gen. Mohammed Ali Jafari of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard who said, “Our imam did not limit the Islamic revolution to this country; our duty is to prepare the way for an Islamic world government. “

Last week, our naïve President Obama told a UN audience, “America is pursuing a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue, as part of our commitment to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and pursue the peace and security of a world without them. And this can only take place if Iran seizes this historic opportunity.”

Flashback to  Aug. 1, 2007 and candidate Obama ridiculing George W. Bush in a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations saying, “The lesson of the Bush years is that not talking does not work.  Go down the list of countries we’ve ignored and see how successful that strategy has been.  We haven’t talked to Iran, and they continue to build their nuclear program.  We haven’t talked to Syria, and they continue support for terror.  We tried not talking to North Korea, and they now have enough material for 6 to 8 more nuclear weapons.”

How has six years of talking worked for you and Secretary Kerry, Mr. President? Iran continues its nuclear program while you relent on sanctions and talk, talk, talk. You drew a red line in Syria and that “reformer” Bashar Assad is still in power.  And North Korea’s Kim Jung Un continues to poke us in the eye.

At least Netanyahu isn’t fooled by Iran’s charm offensive. “It’s designed for one purpose and one purpose only – to lift the sanctions and remove the obstacles to Iran’s path to the bomb,” he said.  “The Islamic Republic is now trying to bamboozle its way to an agreement that will remove the sanctions it still faces and leave it with a capacity of thousands of centrifuges to enrich uranium.”

Yet we understand the Obama administration is considering an agreement with Iran to help defeat ISIS. To that, Reuters recently quoted an Iranian official, who said, “Iran is a very influential country in the region and can help in the fight against the ISIL terrorists, but it is a two-way street.  You give something, you take something.”

“It’s one thing to confront Islamists on pickup trucks with Kalashnikov rifles,  It’s another thing to confront Islamists armed with weapons of mass destruction,” Netanyahu reminded his audience.

While our president continues to say we are not at war with Islam, Netanyahu gets it.
