Observing the 2016 presidential campaign

Trump dismisses Christie – While telling the crowd that it was Gov. Chris Christie’s endorsement that he really wanted, after being introduced by him in Millington, Tennessee, Donald Trump unceremoniously dismissed him on the tarmac, saying, “get on the plane and go home … it’s over there.”

Clinton’s blacks win over Sander’s young whites – How enlightening. Black voters, who seemingly don’t object to be taken advantage of regularly, gave Hillary Clinton a resounding win over Bernie Sanders in South Carolina despite the fact that President Obama has ignored them over the past seven years. On the losing end were Sander’s millennial backers, a bracket of voters 18 to 34 years of age recently labelled “the young and the economically clueless.” Not only are they oblivious to the fact that Clinton has the nomination locked with her rigged super delegate count, they have fallen for Sanders’ promise to bring about fairness, free college, a minimum wage and a redistribution of wealth plan with a $19 trillion price tag.

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) endorses Trump – The man who Ted Cruz continually cited as his ally in the 2013  immigration reform effort, Jeff Sessions, has joined the Trump “movement.” Cruz regularly used his association with Sessions in his attack on Rubio’s immigration position. Still no senator willing to endorse Cruz, including fellow Texas Sen. John Cornyn.

Trump’s character flaws – With the polls favoring him in nearly every primary, Donald Trump continues to assume voters approve of his arrogant know-it-all persona. Referring to Marco Rubio as “little Marco,” and Ted Cruz as a “nasty liar,” accompanied by long rants about each of them, caused his challengers to unfortunately do the same. Both are revealing some of the shady dealings in Trump’s past. Do voters care?

John Kasich was the adult on the stage during the last GOP debate when he clearly and concisely commented on the FBI-Apple iPhone controversy, “Where’s the president been? You don’t litigate this on the front page of the New York Times. The president of the United States should have convened a meeting with Apple and our security services. This is a failure of his leadership to get this done.” If you grabbed the remote when CNN’s Wolf Blitzer allowed Trump, Rubio and Cruz to talk over each other, you may have missed this Kasich moment.

Recommended reading – Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberly A. Strassel has written an interesting piece in the paper’s Feb. 29, 2016 edition, “An Airwaves Strategy to Beat Trump.” In it she describes an effort by the Club for Growth to topple Donald Trump, who they say “is not a pro-growth conservative.” She quotes Club president David McIntosh with saying of Trump that their message that “He’s playing us for chumps,” is resonating. It could be, because Trump has threatened to sue the Club. Click here to read her column in its entirety.
