Liberals vs conservatives

The signs supporting Bernie Sanders – “Feel the Bern” and “A Future to Believe In” – have all but disappeared and have been replaced with Hillary Clinton’s “Together Stronger” and “Love Trumps Hate” signs at the Democrat convention. And “love” has found its way into nearly every speech.

As President Reagan would have said, “there they go again.” Democrats would have you believe that they are the party of compassion, while Republicans are mean spirited.

I recently heard an interview of William Voegeli of the Claremont Institute on welfare in which he pointed out that liberals ask, “Does it feel good?” while the conservative asks, “Does it do good?” It was his response to the trillions of dollars spent on programs to prevent or relieve poverty that have not produced positive results.

“How can the politics of kindness be so cavalier about whether government efforts to alleviate suffering succeed?” he asks, “The problem is not a deficiency of compassion, but the defective moral logic of compassion itself.”

I immediately thought of Hillary’s “together stronger” signs when I heard Voegeli say that the word “compassion” means, literally, “suffering together with another.”

“New York Times columnist Paul Krugman contends that conservatives want to limit government spending on social welfare programs because they take ‘positive glee in inflicting further suffering on the already miserable.’”  How ridiculous.

How many times have you heard Fox’s Sean Hannity cite the liberal mantra that conservatives want to starve children, and that they want dirty air and dirty water. Of course, that’s not true.

Last month I wrote about the Republican plan, A Better Way, in which poverty, opportunity and upward mobility are addressed in a positive approach. It suggests that Americans do not need more one-size-fits-all, top-down government programs that limit their ability to get ahead.

When you hear Hillary talk about raising the minimum wage, day care, paid leave, HillaryCare, free college and all the other things she believes a compassionate government should do, remember she wants to do it by redistributing the wealth of us who have a better way.

Hillary cannot be our next president!
