The two faces of President Obama

“Gray skies are gonna clear up; put on a happy face.

Brush off the clouds and cheer up; put on a happy face.

Take off the gloomy mask of tragedy; it’s not your style.

You’ll look so good that you’ll be glad ya decide to smile …”

Two entertainment talents best known for singing “Put on a Happy Face,” Dick Van Dyke and Tony Bennett, probably aren’t singing this song these days.

The lyrics came to my mind as I watched President Obama during his first meeting with President-Elect Donald Trump Thursday because it was just Monday, during a campaign speech for Hillary Clinton in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that the president called Trump “unfit,” and “unqualified.”

If you watched the Obama-Trump meeting you might think the president took these other lyrics of the song to heart:

“Pick out a pleasant outlook; stick out that noble chin

Wipe off that ‘full of doubt’ look; slap on a happy grin”

Perhaps, but it was the Obama two-face. Just minutes after the meeting, Press Secretary Josh Earnest was telling the media that the president stands by his characterization of the president-elect as fundamentally unfit to be commander-in-chief.

“Look, the president’s views haven’t changed,” said a frustrated Earnest, “He stands by what he said on the campaign trail.”

During a speech to the Congressional Black Caucus two months ago, an enraged Obama screamed and pointed at his audience telling them to get out the vote for Clinton, or tarnish his legacy.

“I will consider it a personal insult – an insult to my legacy – if this community lets down its guard and fails to activate itself in this election,.” he shouted, “My name may not be on the ballot, but our progress is on the ballot.”

The president swallowed hard and made nice during his first meeting with Trump, but don’t believe for a moment that he was serious.

The president knows that it wasn’t only Hillary Clinton that lost on Tuesday night. So did he and his legacy, and I will not shed a tear.
