The media is often the news

Here are some of my observations on news coverage.

MSNBC’S BRIAN WILLIAMS, who, along with CBS’s Dan Rather, is one of the original modern day creators of fake news, was mocked and criticized on Twitter, suggesting that his comments about the U.S. launch of missiles against a Syrian airfield were insensitive to the realities of war. While commenting on the video of Tomahawk missiles being launched from U.S. warships Thursday night during his MSNBC program, “The 11th Hour,” he said, “(the) beautiful pictures of the night” tempted him to quote a line from the Leonard Cohen song – “I am guided by the beauty of our weapons.” He went on to refer to the video images as “beautiful pictures of fearsome armaments.”

JOBS AND REVERSING JOB-KILLING REGULATIONS have led President Trump’s domestic agenda, but the so-called mainstream media are ignoring his efforts. I suppose they figure that if they don’t tell you what he’s doing, you will think he has forgotten his promise. He has met with nearly 100 CEOs in six separate meetings, though they were barely mentioned by ABC, CBS and NBC. A meeting with female business leaders, with participation by four Hispanic business women, got zero coverage from the networks.

TWO CNN VIEWS ON RICE’S ROLEThe Media Research Center noted CNN’s support for Susan Rice over the charges of her unmasking of Trump colleagues and confidants. “Inside Politics” host John King scoffed at Rice’s change of stories about her role. He cited Rice’s “I know nothing about this,” quote on PBS, and her new story on MSNBC. “When someone known for liberal hackery openly mocks Rice, you know the dam is bursting even at CNN,” reports P. J. Gladnick at MRC.

But during Don Lemon’s monologue, he said the network and host will not cover the story about Susan Rice uncovering, or unmasking, the names of Trump officials and confidants who were swept up in surveillance.

“So, let us be very clear about this,” Lemon said, “There is no evidence whatever that the Trump team was surveilled or spied on illegally. And on this program tonight, we will not insult your intelligence by pretending otherwise, nor will we aid and abet the people who were trying to misinform you the American people by creating a diversion. We’re not going to do it.”

I wonder what Lemon will say when Rice is called to testify?

AS A NEWS WONK, I watch a great deal of news coverage each day. Although Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network are my primary sources because they actually cover the news, I often switch over to MSNBC or CNN to see if they are covering a speech or hearing, only to find that they are not.  ABC, CBS and NBC does not because they are locked into a non-news daytime schedule.
