“DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is a very, very difficult subject for me,” said President Trump in the middle of an otherwise contentious press conference Thursday dealing primarily with his disappointment in the media.
“You have these incredible kids,” he said as he made the point that in some cases they might be gang members and drug dealers. “But you have some absolutely incredible kids … they were brought here in such a way … it’s a very, very tough subject. I find it very hard doing what the law says exactly to do.”
After coupling all of the misinformation in the media on President Trump’s immigration plans, from securing the border and the deportation of illegals with criminal records to his recent seven-country temporary immigrant travel ban, his visible empathy on the so-called “Dreamers,” was underreported. Naturally.
Explaining that he wants to deal with the children “with heart,” he stated that he needs to convince legislators to do the right thing. You may recall that when Congress declined to enact the Dream Act, President Obama directed his Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to use “prosecutorial discretion” with respect to these children of illegals.
It appears to me that the president is tackling immigration issues in pieces rather than waiting to develop a comprehensive immigration plan that would surely be the kiss of death. On January 25, he signed an executive order Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements. “Catch and release” is now history.
I believe it would be an excellent political and humanitarian move for him to get the DACA solution on Congress’ agenda.
