Happy Birthday America … Trump correct, Merkel wrong … birds of a feather … socialism defined … more tolerance in Trump country … Washington Post hits the left … and young white men abandoning Democrats

Here are my observations and opinions on selected news of the day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA – Sadly, I heard a young man, who was being interviewed on the meaning behind the celebration of the fourth of July, say, “Sorry, I don’t know.” A young woman responded that she was “not a student of history.” Another claimed it was when we declared our independence from … wait for it …Virginia.

I always remember learning that the signing of the Declaration of Independence was a “grand experiment” that changed America, and the world for that matter. It was the beginning of the recognition of our personal freedoms and our relationship with our government.

If you haven’t read the Declaration of Independence in a while, today would be a good day to refamiliarize yourself with it.

LOOKS LIKE TRUMP WAS CORRECT, MERKEL WRONG – “Chancellor Angela Merkel, who staked her legacy on welcoming hundreds of thousands of migrants to Germany, agreed to build border camps for asylum seekers and to tighten the border with Austria in a political deal to save her government,” according to the New York Times.

Merkel was one of the first European leaders to criticize President Trump’s travel ban in January 2017. Witnessing the migrant situation in Europe, President Trump has been critical of Merkel’s immigration policy which supports free movement across Europe’s borders.

Democrats who support an open border along our southern front should take a lesson from what is being experienced not only in Germany, but other European countries.

Senator Schumer, one of the faces of the Democrat party, supports Senator Durbin. (newsday.com)

BIRDS OF A FEATHER – By now you have heard that Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) insulted our ICE team, calling them “a group of incompetents.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has had to support him on a number of occasions over the years. Here’s one from January 14, 2018:

“To impugn Dick Durbin’s integrity is disgraceful. Whether you agree with him on the issues or not, he is one of the most honorable members of the Senate.”

A NEW DEFINITION OF SOCIALISM – Until now, one of the best definitions of socialism came from former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who said, “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.”

It was her way of explaining that socialism is the form of government that continually expropriates private capital until all industry in the country has been nationalized or until the country’s economy has been run into the ground, which ever comes first.

Since the recent win by a young socialist in New York, who has been touting “free stuff” for everyone, two new definitions have surfaced.

“Socialism is the Axe Body Spray of political ideologies: It never does what it claims to do, but people too young to know better keep buying it anyway.” – Instapundit.com

Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it.” –@ThomasSowell

TOLERANCE IMPROVES OUTSIDE THE BELTWAY – White House Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders and DHS Secretary Kristen Nielsen were asked (forced) to leave Beltway area restaurants merely because they worked for President Trump.

Washington Post columnist and MSNBC contributor Jennifer Rubin has become the poster child for intolerance, with Rep Maxine Waters (D-CA) running a close second. Rubin recently said that Sanders should be “made uncomfortable for life.”

Meanwhile, Washington Post opinion writer Gary Abernathy found that the people in “Trump Country, it turns out, are more tolerant than the left” and wrote about his visit to Hillsboro, Ohio, populations 6,600.

He learned that in Hillsboro, where they voted overwhelmingly for Trump, those with another political persuasion are met with “Can I start you off with something to drink? Followed later by “Can I get you anything else? with a final invitation to “come back soon,” Abernathy wrote.

“The growing encouragement from many on the left and some in the media to define Trump supporters as pariahs or Nazis seems designed to justify and even encourage harassment, intimidation and – then what?” he writes.

“It is astounding to watch them (the left) become that which they claim to despise about the president.” – Gary Abernathy, The Washington Post

COULD THE MEDIA BE TURNING? Naaaaaah, but here’s another story, like the one above, in which the Washington Post recognizes what the left is doing to themselves, and how it could backfire.

“A bad week for Democrats gives rise to a big problem: Outrage could become an obstacle in midterms,” is the headline over a Post piece by Michael Scherer. In it he describes how Democrat leaders are scrambling to keep the political outrage around the Supreme Court nominee, immigration, and abolishing ICE from becoming a liability for the party.

Democrats Sen. Kamala Harris and Rep. Maxine Waters are encouraging people to take to the streets to fight against Trump policies and liberal activist Michael Moore called on the party to abandon a focus on “warm and fuzzy notions like hope,” and embrace a more hardball type of politics.

MEANWHILE, former President Obama offered this meaningless advice:

“The good news that if you act, if we act, then the majority of the American people prefer a story of hope.”

YOUNG WHITE MEN ABANDONING DEMOCRATS – A shock poll by Reuters/Ipsos reveals that white millennial men now favor Republicans over Democrats by 11 percentage points, according to Fraser Myers, writing in Spiked. This represents a swing of 23 percentage points as the group supported Democrats by 12 points in 2016.

They have learned that Democrats see their votes as electorally irrelevant, and when they disappoint the party and decide not to vote for it, they are painted as backward and irrational.

“Clearly, white male millennials are picking up on this kind of language and are beginning to think that they are not wanted by the party,” says Myers.

May God bless the United States of America.
