When Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) told MS/NBC the CIA should “absolutely” issue an apology for its enhanced interrogation techniques, we can only assume she believes we should apologize to the terrorists who were subjected to them. After all, don’t you usually apologize to the victim?
There would be no reason for the CIA operatives involved in the interrogation and detention program to apologize, because they were following orders provided by legal counsel in the Bush administration, where there was an intense effort to prevent post 9/11 attacks.
While some question the success of the techniques in obtaining information, our nation was not hit by follow-on attacks on our homeland, and we did follow leads, some say, to locate and kill Osama Bin Laden.
Representative Speier, expressing shock over the Senate report released by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, said, “we have got to shut this down.” Where has she been!? Speier came into office in 2008. The following year, President Obama did just that. Where was she on April 16, 2009, when President Obama released a 126-page document containing information from four top secret memos that included never before divulged detail on the CIA program?
It was such a blow to the CIA, the president visited CIA headquarters a few days later, telling them not to be discouraged and that “we have to acknowledge potentially we’ve made some mistakes.” Ridiculously, he said, “Withholding these memos would only serve to deny fact that they have been in the public domain for some time.” It’s too bad he doesn’t feel the same way about documents he is withholding on Fast & Furious, Benghazi and the IRS scandal.
If Speier’s earlier remarks didn’t tell you enough about her, she also said, “There’s an arrogance that exists within the CIA that has to be reigned-in.” This comment from a Democrat whose leader, President Obama, doesn’t take a back seat to anyone when it comes to arrogance.
I thought you would like to know: While abortion rights, the environment, gay rights and gun control are high on her agenda, Speier serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
