If ever there was an example of a politician putting a finger in the air to see which way the political wind is blowing, it was obvious when Hillary Clinton, speaking on the Pacific Trade Agreement said, “I can’t support this agreement.”
This is the same Hillary Clinton, who as secretary of state, backed the pact, calling it the “gold standard” for trade deals during her 2012 trip to Australia.
Why? It was the political thing to do. Her opponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders, leading her in many polls, has voiced his opposition to the deal. And the unions don’t like the deal either. “I applaud her for taking this step and choosing to embrace workers’ values,” said Richard Trumka, president of the AFL-CIO.
With her decision she gives the Republican candidates one more flip-flop to use against her. With the Keystone XL pipeline decision she favored environmentalists over the unions, her idea of equality.
