Leave it to the liberal news media to side with Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49er’s second or third rated quarterback, who refused to stand during the playing of the national anthem during a recent pre-season game.
“I’m not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” said Kaepernick.
The left-leaning USA Today newspaper sided with him, saying that Kaepernick was “honoring, not dishonoring, the flag.” Huh?
Most thinking people, black and white, believe that the problems being experienced among blacks stem from absent fathers and single mothers living on welfare. USA Today stops there, merely stating that Kaepernick is the son of a black father and white mother.
They failed to report that Kapernick’s father left his mother before he was born and that his mother placed him up for adoption with Rick and Teresa Kaepernick, a white couple, who were looking for a boy after losing two sons to heart defects.
His upbringing by this white couple led to him becoming an all-state football, basketball and baseball athlete in his senior years, but more impressive was his attainment of a 4.0 GPA. Hardly not what you would expect by someone growing up in an oppressed nation.
Our nation has come a long way in improving racial relations over the past four decades or so, and perhaps there’s still room for improvement, but colored people in the United States are far from oppressed.
Kaepernick has a right to speak as he sees things, but I believe he chose the wrong way to take his stand. Whether he is lucky enough to stay on the 49er roster, or land a position on another NFL team, his presence on the field will continue to be a headache for the NFL. And Kaepernick, I am sure, couldn’t care less.
