Was yesterday Independence Day? … Durbin insults ICE … when Dems lose … Dem death wish … #WalkAway … Meaghan McCain and the president … and LeBron stiffs Cleveland

Here are my observations and opinions on selected news of the day.

WAS YESTERDAY INDEPENDENCE DAY? – Phil Edwards at Vox reminds us that John Adams excitedly wrote in a letter to his wife, Abigail, of his predicted joyous celebrations of American Independence Day on July 2.

At the bottom of the second page of his letter, he made a pronouncement: “But the Day is past. The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most Epocha (sic) in the History of America.”

So why the confusion?, Edwards writes. While the Second Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2, the signing ceremony for the Declaration of Independence didn’t happen until July 4.

History buffs would suggest that we should really celebrate on August 2, when the final draft was fully signed.

SEN. DICK DURBIN, the second most powerful Democrat in the Senate, again brought shame to the party and his office.

“Look at ICE, what a group of incompetents,” he said during a rally in Illinois Sunday morning, “at this point they’re focused more on toddlers than terrorists.”  DHS deals with toddlers, not ICE, Senator.

He joins other Democrat “brains” pushing to abolish ICE; people like Cynthia Nixon of “Sex in the City” fame, socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kristen Gillibrand, two presidential wannabe’s.

SPEAKING OF OCASIO-CORTEZ – A waitress who once worked with her at a New York taco and tequila bar tells the story about the end of a busy Cinco deMayo celebration in 2017. Ocasio-Cortez, then a bar tender, tried to stiff her when it came time to split $560 in tips. She gave the waitress $50, but after complaining to the manager the waitress was given $100.

WHEN DEMOCRATS LOSE, they try to change the rules, commented Andy Weiss of Downers Grove in his letter to the editor of the Chicago Tribune.

“When Democrat lost the election in 2016, there emerged a movement to get rid of the Electoral College, because they deemed it unfair, since they had more popular votes. Now I see some are proposing the elimination of lifetime appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court because a majority of conservative judges is threatening.

“It’s time the Democrats man up and admit they lost fairly, because they keep trying the same old failed policies. You can’t change the rules if you don’t like the outcome,” he wrote.

A DEATH WISH – Roger Simon, writing in PJ Media, reminded his readers that last week he said that Democrats were having a nervous breakdown. “I was wrong. It’s worse. They actually have a death wish. They literally want to extinguish themselves and/or their party, or many of them do. At least they’re acting that way.

“That was the first thing that crossed my mind watching the explosion of demonstrations by liberals and progressives across the country,” he adds.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT Brandon Straka? How about the #WalkAway movement? Some five million people, probably another million by now, have watched Straka’s video on facebook or You Tube.

“He is a former liberal who is the new face of the “silent majority” of Americans who’ve been cast out by family and friends, fired from jobs, and forced into silent social ghettos for their failure to ‘get it’ about how hateful and dangerous Donald Trump is, and why he and all his supporters should be subjected to an ever-expanding social and professional fatwah,” the blogger Fuzzy Slippers reports.

Those who are joining the #WalkAway movement are not necessarily embracing the GOP or conservatism, they’re just walking away from the left and the Democrat party. One new follower said, “The activist left doesn’t give a s**t about your calls for civility. Get ready for a summer of rage. This is where the party is going.”

MEAGAN MCCAIN told the audience of The View that she would never forgive President Trump for his attacks on her father, Sen. John McCain (RINO-AZ).

While I fully understand her devotion to her father, there are some 60 million supporters of the president who will never forgive her father for voting “nay” on the repeal of ObamaCare after saying that he wanted to see it repealed.

While the president continues to speak of his disappointment over that vote during his rallies, he doesn’t mention the senator by name

LEBRON AND MY DISTASTE OF THE PROS – Although I no longer follow professional basketball and football, I couldn’t help but notice the morning headline – “LeBron agrees to 4-year, $154M contract with Lakers.”

I had heard that LeBron James had declared himself a free agent on Friday, but this announcement came quickly. From all reports, he never gave the Cleveland Cavs an opportunity to better its $35.6M option offer.

When I read that it was the Lakers’ legacy that appealed to LeBron, I questioned his loyalty to the city of Cleveland and its fans. Why not continue the legacy he was developing in Cleveland? But no, he waves goodbye to Cleveland for the second time in his career after being drafted as a teenage sensation there in 2003.

Legacy, schmegacy, it’s all about the money, and loyalty to the fans be damned.

May God bless the United States of America.
