Biden’s in, so what … he joins anti-Trumpers … about ‘free’ college … Henninger on Dems and Trump … Mollie Hemingway honored … and Tom Friedman has the answer to immigration problem

Here are my observations and opinions on my selected news of the day.

BIDEN’S IN, SO WHAT – Joe Biden announced his candidacy in the Democrat presidential race with an obviously well-rehearsed video rather than facing voters in person. Of course, he did it that way so he could drag out footage of the August 2017 Charlottesville, Virginia protest rally.

Rather than announcing his bid with an uplifting outlook, outlining his view of a Biden America, he chose to paint a gloomy picture of the country around a single event as an attack on the man who is delivering on his pledge to Make America Great Again.

So, with Biden we can expect more of the same. Further attacks on President Trump. Using his usual tired rhetoric – “The core values of this nation … our standing in the world … our very democracy … everything that has made America is at stake. We are in the battle for the soul of the nation … the character of this nation … and (the ever popular) who we are.”

Trump supporters will not be swayed by the insults directed at the president, by Biden or any of the other candidates, all of whom find ways to insert an insult among the radical socialistic policies (free stuff) they recommend.

While the nation enjoys a booming economy, made possible by President Trump’s direct assault on job-killing regulations and the passage of his Tax Cuts and Jobs legislation, Democrat candidates talk about forgiving college debt, free college, voting privileges for criminals and lowering the voting age to 16, abolishing the electoral college, eliminating private health insurance while pushing single-payer health insurance, and the usual – wealth confiscation – to pay for it all.

ELIZABETH WARREN, queen of “free stuff.” (The Federalist)

FREE COLLEGE SIDEBAR: In her effort to out-socialist Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren put forth her college debt payoff plan that not only calls for “free college,” but wipes clean the college debt of 95 percent of borrowers. Some with of those benefits are available for people with incomes up to $250,000, according to Izez Feltscher Stepman in The Federalist.

Although the plan is being billed as a boon to cash-strapped millennials and Gen-Zers, the real largess will be colleges and universities. Guess who will be the biggest losers? Middle-class Americans – the very sector Warren and Sanders claim to be looking out for.

I found it ironic that Biden warned, “If we give Donald Trump eight years in the White House, he will forever and fundamentally alter the character of this nation, who we are,” when he served under President Obama, who told the nation “we are just five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America,” as he planned his apology tour.

Incidentally, Biden said that he asked former President Obama not to endorse him, and added that the candidates should do it on their own merits. Not convincing, Joe. He would value Obama’s endorsement. A lie within minutes of his video announcement.

Donald Trump, responded to the announcement @realDonaldTrump: Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe. I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign. It will be nasty – you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate.”

On April 16, 2019, the president Tweeted that he saw Sanders and Biden as the two finalists, adding, “I look forward to facing whoever it may be. May God Rest Their Soul!”

FROM THE KEYBOARD of Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel Henninger comes a piece in which he describes the manner in which Democrats and the media moved from collusion with Russia to obstruction of justice and his being unfit to govern.

“Morning, noon and night the media pounded that stuff into America’s consciousness,” he writes, “(now he’s) unfit to be president,” as they drool over the embarrassing language of the Mueller Report on obstruction. You know – the content that “could” have been redacted as executive privilege if the president had so directed. But he didn’t, insisting on full transparency.

“He raged. He told lies. He told his people to lie. In short, he’s too odious to be president,” recalls Henninger, who reminds his readers that while “Character surely counts for something, the last choir boy the voters elected president was Jimmy Carter, who got tossed out after one term.”

While suggesting his readers to ask themselves how “fit” to govern the U.S. the likes of Harris, Warren, Sanders, O’Rourke and Buttigieg would be, he reminds of their radical and costly fantasies.

If fitness for governance counts, Henninger invites one to look at the Democrat-led cities like the pot-holed New York City, homicidal Chicago, needle-park (and feces-ladened) San Francisco and Baltimore with its turnover of five police chiefs in five years.

In conclusion, Henninger states his belief – and mine – that it was the hyper politicized culture of the Obama era that turned people to vote for Trump, no matter what. “That is, what the left has done to the culture makes Mr. Trump’s persona largely irrelevant to them,” he says.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY (from Fox screengrab)

WELCOME NEWS – Have you noticed how conservative bloggers like myself, and political commentators regularly refer to “radical Democrats and the media” together, in developing the latest anti-Trump story. Never before – at least in modern political history – have the two bodies been so entwined.

In an atmosphere of journalistic water-carrying for progressives, news that Hillsdale College in Michigan has named author and journalist Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist (often quoted here) as a senior journalism fellow. In 2016, she served as a Eugene C. Pulliam Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Journalism at Hillsdale.

“Mollie has proven herself to be a skilled investigative journalist and important voice in today’s media,” said Matthew Spaulding, dean of educational programs for Hillsdale in Washington D.C. “She will be an invaluable resource for students and alumni looking to build careers of excellence and integrity in this competitive field.”

IF IT WERE SO SIMPLE, TOMNew York Times columnist Tom Friedman, who claims to have the answer for everything in his liberal mind, has come up with the answer to the overflow of illegals on our Southern Border.

After leaving the confines of New York’s Gray Lady to see what’s happening on the border for himself, he appeared on CNN, where he told Wolf Blitzer, “it’s pretty clear to me that unless we can assure a significant number of Americans that we can control our border, we’re never going to have the proper immigration flow I think we need, we desire, and that we have actually a moral responsibility, given our history as a nation of immigrants, and a refuge for people fleeing persecution.”

Here’s Friedman’s brilliant answer to the problem: “We have a president who actually, when you think about it, Wolf, he has the chops with his base. If he were to sit down, call Nancy Pelosi up, say, we’re going up to Camp David. You bring your immigration team, I’ll bring mine. I’ll leave Stephen Miller at home, and we will actually sort out a compromise here.”

If Friedman doesn’t know, he should know, that exploratory meetings that would hopefully lead to a Pelosi-Trump compromise have not been fruitful. Democrats do not want to give Trump a win. It’s as simple as that.

May God bless the United States of America.
