Here are my observations and opinions from my select news of the day.
ON SECOND THOUGHT – In my original draft of my last blog post I referred to Iowa’s “foolish antiquated caucus system,” but I had second thoughts and dropped the word “foolish,” in the interest of Iowans, who have proudly participated in their caucus system for 48 years.
After Kramerontheright was published, however, I learned of the chaos over the caucus reporting as I attempted to follow the results. All of the candidates declared victory and headed for New Hampshire and Washington DC.
By morning, word surfaced about the development of the Democrat’s app, used to tally votes. Apparently, there was no test run of the system. And the Iowa Democrat Party refused the Department of Homeland Security’s offer to check for hacking, but did send out a press release indicating there was no hacking involved.
Perhaps it’s time for Iowa to give up the “first in the nation” status. They will be the butt of jokes in future election years. There are already jokes on line about the party that gave us the Iowa caucus app wants to take over our healthcare, the environment and free college.
Someone on the Internet belatedly suggested that Democrats buy a copy of “iOS App Development for Dummies.”
Maybe I am being politically incorrect, but the Iowa caucus system is “foolish.”
JENNIFER RUBIN, the leftist columnist for the Washington Post, on May 13, 2019 wrote a piece, “Why Iowa is so important this time.” Monday night she suddenly had an epiphany and opined, “What good are the Iowa caucuses anyway?”
DEMOCRATS probably weren’t pleased to read the headlines of two New York newspapers. The best one was in the New York Daily News, known for its eye-stopping, catchy headlines – “DUH MOINES.” The New York Times carried the banner headline, “Confusion and Anger as Democratic Results Are Delayed in Iowa.” No word yet if they have been asked to rewrite it.
WITH COMPASSION for Rush Limbaugh, who revealed Monday that he had been diagnosed with advanced lunch cancer, Democrat presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard wrote @TulsiGabbard: “I and my family send our love and best wishes to you and your loved ones at this difficult moment in your life. May your hearts and minds be filled with and strengthened by God’s love.”
A class act.
YOUNG VOTERS – You hear a lot about them and their interest in the political process, with much of that directed to the candidacy of socialist Bernie Sanders.
Every election year we are told that young voters are going to make a difference, but many don’t show up at the polls.
I’m more concerned each year because of the progressive views they are getting in colleges and universities by left-leaning professors. That became evident again this morning when I saw a number of students on the campus at Virginia’s Marymount University taken aback when they learn the source of quotes.
Campus Reform’s Cabot Phillips asked a few pro-Joe Biden students to guess which candidate – Trump or Biden – was the source of several racially-charged quotes.
The students all believed the following quotes were made by Trump, even though they were all been heavily publicized over the years as quotes by Biden:
“They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”
“You cannot go into a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”
“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
GALLUP reported Tuesday that President Trump’s approval rating hit 49 percent, his highest mark in that polls since he took office.
MEANWHILE – Zogby Analytics reported that the improving economy and voter anger with the partisan impeachment process helped boost President Trump’s support among blacks, Hispanics, independents and suburban women, and has a 51 percent approval rating in the Zogby survey.
Notable was the 22 percent of African-Americans who “strongly” or “somewhat“ approve of the president, a significant jump from the eight percent he won in 2016. Hispanic voter approval went up to 36 percent from 28 percent in 2016.
WHEN PRESIDENT TRUMP takes an action to benefit a minority, it generally gets no news coverage. In case you haven’t heard, he has tapped Georgia pastor Tony Lowden to be the new “reentry czar,” a position created to help former inmates find first housing, employment and other opportunities to provide “second chances” for success after they leave prison.
May God continue to bless the United States of America.
