Good news for the economy … Susan Rice can’t help herself … the holiday nonsense … Tucker Carlson gets top ratings … I was wrong … poll buster … from my memoir … and laugh-of-the-day

Here are my observations and opinions from my select news of the day.

THE ECONOMY CONTINUES TO COME BACK – President Trump was justifiably ebullient Thursday morning in announcing that U.S. employers added 4.8 million jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent.  It marks the second straight month of job improvement.  The loss of 2.76 million reported for May was revised to a gain of 3.07 million, giving us eight million jobs in two months.

In his announcement, the president reminded doubters that the jobs improvement figures included good news for Black and Hispanic workers, and especially individuals without a college degree.

Not good news for Joe Biden, who talks about raising taxes.

SUSAN RICE simply cannot pass up an opportunity to stick it to President Trump. This time, as in her CYA memo and other comments on the networks of the left, she inadvertently accused Barack Obama of dereliction of duty in a New York Times op-ed.

For Rice, the story that Trump ignored intelligence on alleged Russian bounties on U.S. troops was just too good to pass up, according to Matt Margolis in PJ Media. She disputed the claim that Trump was unaware of the intelligence, however, Catherine Herridge, the respected intelligence reporter at CBS News, said that a review of the briefings showed that the inclusion of the bounties story was not included.

In her op-ed, Rice went into great detail regarding the handling of intelligence briefings for Obama, surfacing questions as to why he claimed to be caught off guard about the rise of ISIS.  Considering the Obama daily briefing procedures she reviewed, Obama knew about the rise of ISIS, and did nothing about it.

Don’t expect the leftist media to look into this as they continue to derail the Trump campaign with another fake news story.

HOLIDAY NONSENSE – You’ve no doubt heard some of the discussion about eliminating or replacing holidays amid the rants over racism in America.  During an appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Mark Steyn, political commentator, suggested a new holiday to celebrate Republican senators, who are going weak-kneed.  It would replace Groundhog Day. On that day, when a senator pulls his head out of the sand and realizes he doesn’t have a backbone, he puts his head back in the sand, signifying no action for the next six years.

SPEAKING OF TUCKER CARLSON, it seems as though his no-BS coverage of Seattle and Minneapolis’ failures, the rioting and looting, the tearing down of statues and the exploitation by Black Lives Matter caught the attention of the 25-54-year-old viewer demographic, much to the surprise of pollsters who see the Fox News Channel popular to the over 60s.

Carlson’s show topped the three Fox shows leading up to his time slot – The Five, Special Report and The Story – while continuing to pull more viewers than the shows that follow – Hannity and the Ingraham Angle.

At the same time, he crushed CNN’s Chris Cuomo, Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett.

I WAS WRONG – I recently wrote that George Floyd was gone and forgotten as the Black Lives Matter movement hijacked his brutal death to put forth its list of demands that do not reflect on the need for police reform.

However, I recently learned that Philonise Floyd’s GoFundMe page, created on May 27, 2020, with a $1,500,000 goal to help pay for funerals and memorials, recorded donations of $14,568,000.  Gone, but certainly not forgotten by some half million donors.

IF YOU MISSED the appearance of HUD Secretary Ben Carson on Martha MacCallum’s The Story on July 1, 2020, you missed this accomplished black man’s opinion of the Black Lives Matter movement.  CLICK HERE TO VIEW IT.

THE MYTH OF POLLS – Republican Rep. Scott Tipton, a five-term representative from Colorado, had a 30-point lead in internal polling going into the primary, but lost by nine points to Lauren Boebert.

Although President Trump had endorsed Tipton, Boebert is an outspoken supporter of the president.  The 33-year-old owner of the gun-themed Shooters Grill in Rifle, Colorado, encourages servers and patrons to openly carry firearms.

She carries a Glock on her hip and sells shirts with the words “GOD, GUNS, TRUMP.”

In a similar situation in North Carolina, President Trump supported Lynda Bennett in her bid to win the seat of Mark Meadows, who recently resigned to become Trump’s chief of staff, but Madison Cawthorn, a supporter of the president, handily defeated Bennett.  The president invited him to the White House during a call of congratulations.

HUGH DOWNS, far right, reviews a script with Brig. Gen. William C. Garland and colleague Jack Lescoulie during Today Show remote.

FROM MY MEMOIR – In 1965, NBC did a remote broadcast of its Today Show from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, where I was assigned and served as a technical advisor for the broadcast.  In that capacity, I had the pleasure of working with host Hugh Downs and co-host Jack Lescoulie.  Sadly, Downs passed away Thursday in Scottsdale, where I now reside.

LAUGH-OF-THE-DAY – When President Trump tweeted his criticism of Mayor Jenny Durkin’s handling of the occupation of Seattle by a group of miscreants, she responded @MayorJenny: “Seattle is fine.  Don’t be so afraid of democracy.”  Is that what it was.

May God continue to bless the United States of America
