2024 Presidential Election: C’mon In, the Water’s Fine

Commentary

Trump’s in and Haley’s the first challenger, so what’s the holdup for the others who you just know have decided to run?  Still discussing it with the family? Praying about it? I don’t buy it.

The 2024 Presidential Election is 622 days off, but I thought I would give you a brief recap on where we are at this stage.

Former President Trump and former South Carolina Governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley are the only two Republicans to declare their candidacy so far.

“It’s time for a new generation of leadership – to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border, and strengthen our country, our pride and our purpose,” Haley said in announcing her candidacy.

If frequent appearances on TV are to be considered as to who might be close to be making that decision, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo could announce soon.

A February 17, 2023 Rasmussen poll revealed that DeSantis trails Trump by 13 points, although 75 percent of Republicans view DeSantis favorably.

Several big money donors are looking for a fresh face in 2024 and have indicated they don’t intend to support Trump.

“To write a new chapter for our country, we need to turn the page on the past,” wrote Emily Seidel, CEO of Americans for Prosperity, showing DeSantis ahead of Trump 53 percent to 40 percent in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up.

Others frequently named as possible Republican candidates are New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununo, former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson. In a recent Rasmussen poll, just 14 percent of Republican voters said they would support someone other than Trump or DeSantis.

The GOP has a strong bench with South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and former vice president Mike Pence, also weighing their future.  The Washington Examiner listed eight other possible candidates.

Personally, I don’t want to see a dozen or more GOP candidates attacking each other on national TV.

Former Democrat presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard, who recently became an Independent has been appearing frequently on Fox as a contributor, however, I don’t see her running in 2024.

President Biden has expressed his intention to run, but he has not made a formal announcement yet. Reportedly, 64 percent of Democrats would prefer a different candidate for their party, and Vice President Harris continues to be questionable as his running mate, should he decide to run.

No Democrat has even hinted at challenging Biden.

Stay tuned.

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
