Michigan Defeats Washington: Too Much to Hope For?

Commentary

On New Year’s Day, I wrote about the challenge the Michigan Wolverines would face in the semi-playoff game with the Alabama Crimson Tide.  It was a tight game as I imagined it would be, but the Maize and Blue came through victorious.

Since that game, I have had considerable difficulty in thinking about the political scene, the subject matter this blog should be addressing.  With the Iowa caucuses soon to take place, I assure you I will be providing my political commentary.

THE FACE OF A WINNER: MICHIGAN’S BLAKE CORUM

However, as I write this, my focus is on the college playoffs in Houston with concerns similar to those I had with Alabama as Michigan will face a tough Washington Husky football team.

We were able to handle Alabama’s talented quarterback Jalen Milroe; sacking him six times, and pretty well controlling his play as he completed 16 out of 23 passes for 116 yards and rushed for 63 yards on 21 carries for a three-yard per try average.

Impressive defense, yes, but Michigan must now face Michael Penix, Jr., who was the runner-up quarterback nominated for the Heisman Trophy.  Michigan’s defensive line cannot afford to be cocky.  He is extremely talented.  When he chooses to pass, he has four outstanding wide receivers.

While Penix looked great against Texas in the Sugar Bowl, throwing for 411 yards, one has to wonder about the Huskies 15-7 win over hapless 1-6 Arizona State with no offensive touchdowns and the last second field goal for the Huskies to defeat the 5-7  Washington State Cougars.  Game footage I am sure Michigan coach Harbaugh has viewed.

Michigan fans can never get comfortable during a game, even with a rare two touchdown lead.  I don’t expect it to be any different tonight, but GO BLUE.

May God continue to bless the United States of America and may the best team win.
