2024 Presidential Election Report No. 8

Commentary

Former President Trump

As the Wall Street Journal editorial board put it, “the 2024 presidential race will be unlike any other, not least because many of its major events (are taking) place in courtrooms.”

Presidential Immunity

In a blow to Special Counsel Jack Smith, the Supreme Court has granted former President Trump’s request to decide if he is immune from prosecution on charges of attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The order instructs the appellate court in Smith’s case paused until the Supreme Court has made its decision.

Regarding immunity, Trump wisely argued that the Court’s decision is not only important in his case but for all future presidents.

You may recall that Smith was given broad authority in the cases of Trump’s retention of classified documents and his role in the January 6 Capital riot.

New York “Fraud” Case

Former President Trump is appealing this case brought by New York Letitia James, after campaigning for office declaring she would “get Trump.”

Despite the fact that no one had been damaged by Trump, and there were no complaints seeking relief, James persuaded the judge that she was permitted to prosecute “persistent fraud or illegality” without need for showing traditional elements of fraud like intent and damages, let alone a victim.

In Georgia

The judge in Fulton County Georgia patiently listened to both sides last week and stated he would be studying whether to find Attorney General Fani Willis guilty of prosecutorial misconduct, unethical and indiscreet actions with prosecutor Nathan Wade during their developing the RICO case against Trump involving the 2020 election in Georgia.

His decision, which could result in the removal of Willis and her team from the case or the dismissal of the case, is expected in two weeks. The latter decision would result in further delays.

Trump Wins

Trump triumphed in Missouri, Michigan, and Idaho, capturing all the delegates at stake Saturday, setting the stage for more key races on Super Tuesday.

Trump Running Mate

Coincidentally, a friend of mine, who is not fond of Trump, indicated his concern over Trump’s running mate, however, 80 percent in a Rasmussen recent telephone and online survey said Trump’s choice of a running mate will not make much difference in whether they would vote for him.  Just 14 percent said it would make a difference to them.

When asked about those reportedly on Trump’s “short list,” 16 percent favored Sen. Tim Scott,  Gov. Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy were preferred by 14 percent.  Gov. Kristy Noem and former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard were in single digits.

Trump and Biden Visit Border

Although members of the U.S. Border Patrol were on their best behavior when President Biden visited the border at Brownsville, Texas last week, they had some choice words for him after he departed.

When a reporter asked him, “Why are you waiting to take executive action on the border?” his response was “I don’t have the authority to do that.”

Yet it is known that he took 94 executive actions in his first 100 days to decimate border security.  He has the authority.  He continued to blame the Republican Congress for blocking progress on the border.

Meanwhile, 300 miles from Brownsville, in Eagle Pass, where millions of illegals have crossed the border, former President Trump met with Gov. Abbott and members of the National Guard, who have severely cut illegal traffic despite lawsuits by Biden’s DOJ.

Washington pundits believe that President Biden will use his State of the Union Address to announce a revised plan for the border, that will not be accepted by Republicans, believing he will continue to press for asylum and a pathway to citizenship.

Alabama Senator Britt

The GOP Response …

…to Biden’s State of the Union address on March 7, 2024, will be given by a rising star in the Republican Party, Alabama’s Sen. Katie Britt, who is serving in her first term.  Pundit Hugh Hewitt recently called attention to Britt, citing her as a good choice for vice president.

As I Published … Amazon delivered my printed copy of Special Counsel Robert K. Hur’s “Report on the Investigation Into Unauthorized Removal, Retention, and Disclosure of Classified Documents Discovered at Locations Including the Penn Biden Center and the Delaware Private Residence of President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.”

I chose to wait for a published copy rather than print the 400-page report on my printer.

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
