Democrats Embarrass Selves … Obama Era Emission Regulation Gone … Why No Voter ID? … and the Washington Post in Skid

Commentary

I know, it’s been a week since I last shared with you my comments on a variety of topics, but it doesn’t mean there wasn’t material worth writing about, so here goes.

Democrats Embarrass Selves

Three Democrats who are often referred to as presidential hopefuls – Newsom, Ocasio-Cortez and Whitmer – managed to embarrass themselves and their party while participating in the Munich Security Conference

NEWSOM

With his recent embarrassing appearance at the World Economic Conference in Davos, Switzerland still on the minds of those of us who follow these events, Newsom again chose to attack Trump, but in doing so he belittled foreign leaders for “rolling over” for the White House, suggesting that they look “pathetic on the world stage,” while not realizing how he looks.

He tried to position California as a “stable and reliable” alternative to federal government as he reminded the international audience that the Trump administration is merely “temporary” and will be “gone in three years.”

OCASIO-CORTEZ

Observers wondered how Ocasio- Cortez wound up on a foreign policy panel when they experienced her cringe-worthy word salad response to a question about Taiwan.

WHITMER

The there was Michigan’s Whitmer, who made the mistake of saying Ocasio-Cortez was more “up” on foreign policy as she stumbled while trying to respond to the question of how victory would look to Ukraine.

“Danger, Will Robinson!”

I recall using that catchphrase from the 1960s TV series, Lost in Space, spoken by the robot to warn Will Robinson of impending threats on a particular planet, as I criticized the “Endangerment Finding” of President Obama’s over the top EPA organization in 2009.

It purported to find that CO2 and other greenhouse gases “are a danger to human health and welfare.”  I was especially critical of how a group of unelected bureaucrats could decide what was best for us, not Congress.

Regular readers may recall my disgust with CEOs of our auto manufacturers who were weak-kneed, falling in line with the regulation’s Café standards of auto and truck emissions.

Thanks to President Trump, who urged his EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to developing the “Recission of the Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding and Motor Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards Under the Clean Air Act,” signed on February 13, 2026.”

Expect the leftist progressive legal challenges as it heads for the Federal Register.

Voter IDs

Officially called the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act that passed in the House, it must now face a vote in the Senate, where common sense doesn’t exist as long as President Trump is in the White House.

“What better way to eliminate that distrust than to make sure that whoever votes is an American citizen who is truly eligible to vote, “said Rep. Mike Handopolos of Hawaii, addressing the trust issue.

Democrat leaders Schumer and Jeffries see the act as voter suppression, dishonestly claiming the difficulty for some to get the ID.  Republicans are, of course, concerned with the millions of illegals who crossed the border during the Biden administration.

Washington Post Skids

I was delighted to read about the troubles at The Washington Post, where hundreds of newsroom people and others were being let go.

“If we are to thrive, not just endure, we must reinvent our journalism and our business model with renewed ambition,” Executive Editor Matt Murray told his employees.

I was amused by Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan’s reaction to the news.

“The diminishment of the Washington Post hits hard because it feels like another demoralizing thing in our national life,” she wrote, explaining, “Our public life as a nation – how we are together, how we talk to each other, the sound of us – isn’t what it was.  The Post was a pillar.

“Finally,” she noted, “losing the one major newspaper left in the great nation’s capital – and during the Trump administration no less – is more than a Jeffersonian nightmare, it is a kind of sin.  The kind history doesn’t easily forgive.”

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
