I don’t know about you, but I am enjoying how President Trump is confounding Democrats.
They refer to the president as a racist for not dealing with DACA, and what does he do but propose a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal immigrants – Dreamers – nearly three times as generous as the Dems have ever sought. And they are balking at the deal.
After the Florida school shooting, while Democrats were making their tired call for gun control, President Trump made an impassioned speech calling for calm and promising to make school safety a priority when he met with community and state officials during an upcoming meeting.
He visited the injured and families in the hospital and first responders at the sheriff’s department the next day, and this week he has held three separate meetings with the families of victims of this and other mass shootings, law enforcement officials and state attorney’s general.
During those meetings he not only listened to concerned people on gun control, background checks, behavioral issues, gun purchase age requirements, arming teachers and hardening schools, he openly stated that he would actively work with them, the NRA and lawmakers to finally address the issue of school safety. And, he directed the attorney general to ban the sale of bump stocks and other gun modifiers.
Meanwhile, Democrats continued their tired push for gun control of the AR15. The day after the shooting, there stood Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in the street across from the school, his sleeves rolled up as if he was going to personally tackle the issue, shamefully making it a political issue.
While most Democrats have gone silent, realizing they look foolish with the president addressing “their” issues, it hasn’t stopped the anti-Trump media. Jeffrey Toobin at CNN and Jonathan Karl at ABC were heard ridiculing the president’s suggestion that perhaps some teachers would be willing to take concealed carry training and arm themselves.
CNN staged what they called a townhall to discuss the Florida shooting. We learned that at least one parent and one student were given CNN-prepared questions to ask panelists.
And then there was Jimmy Kimmel, the mental midget of late night TV, who made fun of a note card the president held during the meeting with victims’ families.
It will be interesting to see how the Democrats (and Republicans) respond to the proposed school safety issues, because it will take legislation to address them head on. Of course, communities and states can take on issues in their control.
While all of this was going on, Democrat Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was in Phoenix telling those who would listen (including the Arizona Republic editorial board) that the president’s tax cut was “unpatriotic.” Huh?
