Here are my observations and opinions on selected news of the day.
OH MY GOD, NO! – National Public Radio’s Nina Totenberg told her All Things Considered audience that “(Anthony) Kennedy’s retirement is the end of the world as we know it.” However, she apparently doesn’t take herself seriously, because she proceeded to say what we could expect from a conservative-leaning Court.
THERE’S MORE – “The nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh will threaten the lives of millions of Americans for decades to come,” wrote former Virginia Gov. Terry McAulliffe @TerryMcAulliffe
WISHFUL THINKING – While interviewing author J.D. Vance, MSNBC host Katy Tur said, “Based on where Americans stand on the issues, and Americans have really moved in a much more progressive (read liberal) direction over the years, do you think it’s appropriate to continue to take such a strict, originalist view of the Constitution, given it’s 2018 and not 1776?”
Aside from the fact that the Constitution wasn’t written and signed until 1787, Vance responded saying, “I’d segment what you think the proper public policy should be from what a constitutional Supreme Court should rule our system, so I think Judge Kavanaugh’s views about the Constitution are really what we should be talking about, not whether he want to move us in a given public policy direction.”
JIM TREACHER @jtLOL writes: “Okay, people we need ammo on Kavanaugh, whaddaya got … um, his first name is Brett; Good, we can use that, what else? … he drank a lot of beer in college; Perfect, the attack ads write themselves, gimme more … he really likes baseball; Brilliant, this is how we stop him.”
AMONG THE CONFLICTING STATEMENTS made by disgraced FBI Agent Peter Strzok during the hearing today was this one noted by Fox political analyst Brit Hume @brithume – “Just after noon, Peter Strzok actually denied that his text messages expressing disdain for Trump were ‘indicative of bias.’ He actually said that.”
CONGRESSMAN INSULTS PURPLE HEART RECIPIENTS – Tennessee Democrat Rep. Steven Cohen failed to uphold his assignment on the pro-Peter Strzok team during testimony today when he, of all things, told Strzok, “If I could give you a Purple Heart, I would. You deserve one.”
It was a direct insult to the thousands of military warriors who have earned the Purple Heart, which is presented to someone injured in enemy action, who received medical treatment from a medical officer.”
GOOD NEWS reports Stephen Kruiser at PJ Media. The anti-Trump media may have succeeded in wearing down Scott Pruitt, but the agency he headed will continue President Trump’s objective of rolling back regulations.
He was referring to Pruitt’s replacement at the EPA, Andrew Wheeler, who has been known to shun the spotlight, but can be expected to carry out President Trump’s deregulation policy more effectively.
