As I watched FBI Director James Comey testify before the House Oversight Committee yesterday, there was a familiarity to it.
I thought the fix was in some time ago, so what I heard shouldn’t have come as a surprise. Comey reiterated that Hillary Clinton was extremely careless with the handling of classified documents, and proved that she has been lying all along. But alas, it didn’t stack up to a finding of criminal intent.
I was shocked, however, to learn that with a high level case as this, dealing with the actions of a presidential candidate, that Comey himself did not participate in the questioning of Clinton. And he wasn’t sure how many agents – 4, 5 or 6 – had questioned her.
But then came the blockbuster – Clinton was not questioned under oath and there was no taped recording or transcript of the three-and-a-half-hour inquiry. Unbelievable.
Comey stuck with his earlier statement that no one knew in advance that he was going to make his announcement, or what he was going to say on Tuesday.
President Obama would not have flown Clinton to a rally in North Carolina on Air Force One hours later, and make the statement that there hasn’t been anyone so qualified for the office, if her indictment was imminent.
Regarding the familiarity I referred to in the lead paragraph:
On a number of occasions, I have written about the so-called independent Accountability Review Board Hillary Clinton appointed to investigate the attack on Benghazi.
You will possibly recall that she named former Ambassador Thomas R. Pickering and Admiral Mike Mullen as chairman and vice chairman, respectively. Personally, I recall one of the pundits saying at the time that the administration hoped that putting two “grey hairs” in charge would put critics at ease. They were referred to as having “unimpeachable expertise.” How many times did we hear that Comey was a straight arrow?
Like Comey, Pickering and Mullen did not interview Clinton, and didn’t even visit Benghazi. And their findings did not mention names. “Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus of the State Department resulted in a Special Mission posture that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place,” the report stated.
“The Board did not find that any individual U.S. Government employee engaged in misconduct or willfully ignored his or her responsibilities, and therefore did not find reasonable cause to believe that an individual (Clinton?) breached his or her duty so as to be the subject of a recommendation for disciplinary action,” the report concluded.
Finally, it appears that Hillary’s aide Cheryl Mills, who was an active participant in the destruction of Clinton’s e-mails, allegedly brought undue influence on the composition of the ARB report three years ago.
It’s all too familiar.
Ironically, the quote – “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” was emblazoned at the top of the ARB report.
Hillary Clinton may have escaped indictment, but the GOP has enough to remind voters of her untrustworthiness, disinterest in national security, and outright lying.
