Bret Stephens for dummies

If you’re truly confident in American institutions, then we’ll ride out Mrs. Clinton just as we have Mr. Obama.” – Bret Stephens

This blog is my response to Bret Stephens’ column, “NeverTrump for Dummies, published Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal. Stephens uses a hackneyed question and answer format in which he answers questions from an imagined inquisitor.

The quote above comes from his response to the question – “Look, with Hillary I know what I am getting and it’s a disaster. With Trump, there’s a chance he will keep his promises and grow in office.”

Elitist columnist Bret Stephens would “ride out” four years of Hillary Clinton before voting for Donald Trump. (lobelog.com)

“As for Trump,” Stephens responds, “the man you see as nominee is the man you’ll get as president, only with more vanity and vastly more power,” believing he will not change in the presidency.

Last month I wrote about those who would sacrifice their integrity and “live with” four years of Hillary rather than see Trump in the White House, and you can now add Stephens to those who would do so.

It doesn’t come as a surprise, as it was Stephens who opened a column last year with, “If by now you don’t find Donald Trump appalling, you’re appalling.” That slam against WSJ readers reminds me of Hillary’s recent slam against Trump voters coming from a “basket of deplorables.”

Stephens wrote of the “bluntness” of Trump, who “toes no line … serves no PAC … abides no ideology … is beholden to no man,” and seems to be troubled by Trump’s disgust with the failed political establishment. Isn’t that why the people nominated him?

The columnist referred to Trump’s ideas as “semi-sophisticated theories that act as bathroom deodorizer to mask the stench of his candidacy.” Are those the words you would expect from the deputy editorial page editor of the prestigious Wall Street Journal?

Stephens is typical of the New York elitist media, who cannot just admit that he once said, “I doubt that Mr. Trump will be its (the GOP’s) presidential nominee.”

Trump has come a long way since the primaries, when Stephens turned against him, delivering major speeches on key issues putting him in a dead heat with Clinton. Yet Stephens would vote for Clinton even though he has stated. “She’s conventionally liberal, politically opportunistic and ethically challenged,” Stephens writes, and is satisfied that “Mrs. Clinton lies tactically to protect herself politically.”
