Shame on Rep. John Lewis

As Martin Luther King Day approached, how disappointing it was to hear Rep. John Lewis, who marched with King and praised his message of togetherness, claim Donald Trump’s victory was illegitimate, and that he would not attend his inaugural.

I have to believe that King, too, would have been disappointed in Lewis. I believe King would have given Trump the opportunity to demonstrate how he would follow through when he asked blacks in the inner cities to vote for him saying, “what have you got to lose?”

Of course, the media criticized Trump’s tweet following Lewis statement – “All talk, talk, talk … no action.” No one would question Lewis’ resume on civil rights, including Trump. The president elect, I’m sure, was referring to the eight years of inaction in the inner cities under President Obama, who Lewis endorsed in 2008; after committing to Hillary Clinton, I might add. Everyone knows how the Democrat leadership has taken the black vote for granted.

To make matters worse, I understand Lewis has initiated a fundraising letter in which he quotes Trump with saying, I’m “all talk” and “no action” while reminding people how he was beaten bloody, fighting for what’s right for America in reference to his march with King. How deceitful and fraudulent!

Lewis claims he refuses to stop now, and that he’s not done fighting for progress. He’s ready for the next four years. Citing the progress made toward a vision of a more fair, just and open country, Lewis states that the majority of Americans are afraid this country is headed in the wrong direction. Surely, he understands that was the people’s opinion of the Obama presidency?

If I were Trump, I would have asked Lewis to “work with me, what have you got to lose?” And that goes for the rest of the “all talk” Black Caucus, many of whom will not be attending the inauguration.  Shame on them all.
