My observations on the news of the day.
YOU JUST CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP – Over time we have come to expect wacko statements from Democrat Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), but it seems as though she deliberately sets out to top her previous remarks. For example, this is what she had to say about the GOP health insurance bill during an interview on CBS This Morning on Monday:
“We do know that many more people, hundreds of thousands of people, will die if this bill passes.”
Neither Charlie Rose or Gayle King, anchors of the show, challenged Pelosi on that statement, a stunning example of mainstream media bias.
PELOSI AND OTHER DEMOCRATS attempted to soft-peddle, their recent House election losses, despite spending millions of dollars trying to win. The media, utilizing Democrat talking points that the elections were a referendum on President Trump’s policies, avoided that description after the losses. Note the somber looks on the faces of the CNN panel in the accompanying photo taken at the moment Karen Handel defeated Jon Ossoff in Georgia.
QUESTIONABLE DECISION – If Nevada’s Sen. Dean Heller thinks that opposing the GOP health insurance bill will help him retain his vulnerable seat in the 2018 midterms, he’s probably mistaken. “Democrats won’t ease their opposition to (him) if he votes no. They’ll double their investment against him as (his) base sours on him,” wrote The Wall Street Journal editorial staff.
THE DEMISE OF JOURNALISTIC STANDARDS was the subject of a speech by Michael Goodwin, chief political columnist for The New York Post, at a recent Hillsdale College National Leadership Seminar. “Most of what you read, watch, and listen to is distorted by intentional bias and hostility,” he remarked, “I have never seen anything like it. Not even close.”
Commenting on the 2016 presidential campaign coverage, he said, “Every story was an opinion masquerading as news, and every opinion ran in the same direction – toward Clinton and away from Trump.” He added that “Trump was savaged like no other candidate in memory.”
Goodwin blames The New York Times and The Washington Post for the demonization of President Trump, recalling that the Times had not endorsed a Republican since Dwight Eisenhower, while the Post has never endorsed a Republican for president. “The behavior of much of the media, but especially The New York Times, was a disgrace,” he said, “I don’t believe it ever will recover the public trust it squandered.”
FROM THE FOURTH ESTATE – Standing outside a Trump property in Turkey, MSNBC’s Malcom Nance tweeted – “This is my nominee for first ISIS bombing of a Trump property.” … MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski, speaking with former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett, pleads – “Could you, could he (Obama) come back and save the party and tell them (Democrats) what to do?” … After Trump’s 90-day mark in office, NBC’s Chuck Todd opined Trump’s presidency is “on the brink.” (Media Resource Center)
