These are my observations and opinions from my select news of the day.
LEAVE IT TO CNN and Brian Stelter to pre-empt President Trump’s up-coming decision on reopening our economy using anonymous sources who say that a political calculation that will serve Trump’s interest was made to put the onus on state governors.
Here’s the content of his tweet @brianstelter: “Administration officials say the White House has made a deliberate political calculation that it will serve Trump’s interest to put the onus on governors – rather than the federal government – to figure out how to move ahead.”
Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist responded @MZHemingway with: “Yes, the U.S. Constitution is a hundred years-long plot to help Trump win the election.”
First, Stelter could have made his statement as opinion without attributing it to “administration officials,” because the president is certain to decide that the federal government cannot, and should not, issue a one-size-fits-all order to the governors to open their states to business.
“North Dakota isn’t New York,” insisted North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum as governors contemplated shutdown actions to be taken in their states.
Presidents can declare national emergencies, but in the current situation, the provisions of states’ rights surely come into play, just as the president requires a governor’s request to declare a specific emergency in their state.
When the president gathers his economy-focused task force to develop a way forward, select governors will be included. I have heard that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine might be one.
When the president announces his decision, you can expect CNN, MSNBC, much of the print media, and leftist blogs to criticize whatever actions are decided upon. And, God forbid if the opening is not smoothly accomplished.
THE PROVISIONS OF FEDERALISM are slowly working their way into the way some of the media are reporting the way the states and the private sector are working with the federal government.
Writing at INSIDESOURCES, Stephen L. Miller noted that at the left-leaning Daily Beast it may be sinking is, however, two editors seem to not quite get it. “I’m not the first person to make this observation but it truly is remarkable the degree to which local and state officials, as well as private entities and businesses, are making these massive public health policy decisions while the feds seem to moving much more slowly,” wrote Sam Stein.
Stein’s editorial colleague, Molly Jong Fast, a fervent critic of the president, tweeted, “So the states are basically governing themselves because our president doesn’t know how to ‘president’ at all?”
Stein and Jong Fast, and others in the leftist media, are so fixated on big government taking complete charge of our lives, they’ve paid no attention to the meetings President Trump has had for weeks with people from all walks of life – governors, men and women representing businesses large and small, law enforcement people, religious figures, non-profit representatives, and others. He sought their advice and suggestions, during which he asked them to get involved.
That’s what a president with leadership abilities does, Ms. Jong Fast.
It’s sad, that the media must be reminded that leaving power with locally elected officials is a tenet of federalism and was designed by our founding fathers to avoid overreach and power grabs from the federal government.
WHERE’S THE RECOVERY PLAN? – While some of the media believe the president is being too anxious to reopen our economy, others are getting impatient to see the plan. He was even criticized for not having the final plan ready.
“What is Trump waiting for?” writes Geoffrey P. Hunt in American Thinker. “Why is he taking orders from saboteurs and unhinged alarmists?” Where is the plan to re-open America? We’ve been asking that question for weeks. We want the plan to get back work, not in a month, not in two weeks, but tomorrow.”
Picking up on the belief of Brit Peter Hitchens, and a former British Supreme Court Justice, in a recent piece by Breitbart’s James Delingpole, Hunt notes that they decry the descent into totalitarian madness by stripping civil liberties in seek of a cure to an overstated malady.
“Unless Trump launches the recovery plan in a few days, he will be blamed for the pandemic panic, the economic devastation, and ensuring social upheaval,” Hunt states.
“Imagine this: Trump will have defeated the fake Russia collusion, fought off the Ukrainian impeachment lunacy, survived nonstop harassment since inauguration day, while engineering the most robust economy in half a century,” says Hunt.
“Yet, as he fails to come up with a credible exit plan on this, seemingly dithering, his triumphs will be all for naught, reelection hopes dashed, defeated by bureaucrats wielding self-serving credentials but nothing else.”
Strong stuff, but prescient.
IT’S THE ENCROACHMENT on personal liberties during a shutdown that troubles Attorney General Bill Barr. ‘I’m very, very concerned,” he said.
MEANWHILE, Texas Gov. Greg Abbot, while revealing that he has been in constant contact with the president in discussions how to proceed with beginning the process of allowing businesses to open up again, announced Friday that he will give his plan on how to reopen his state’s economy next week.
“We have a desire to make sure it’s done in a way that it’s safe,” Abbot said, while Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick added, “We’re not going to open up everything immediately, but it will be done in phases. We need to get started, and I hope that’s the first week of May.”
PONDER THIS – Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein sent a letter to President Trump, urging him to “support Iran’s request for $5 billion in emergency funds from the IMF based on an exception for humanitarian aid.” It would be “contingent upon IMF oversight on how Iran spends the funds,” she wrote.
Her colleague in the Senate, Republic Ted Cruz, reminds in a tweet @tedcruz: “The Ayatollah leads chants of ‘death to America.’ He pledges to destroy America, which he calls ‘the Great Satan.’ And Senate Dems want to send him millions??? At the EXACT SAME TIME, Senate Dems are blocking desperately needed relief to small businesses in America.”
May God continue to bless the United States of America.
