Power-Hungry Democrats Face a Dilemma

Commentary

It has been said that “power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,” but that doesn’t faze Democrats, especially now, when they are wielding it in Washington.

However, they want to shore-up that power and they are taking some embarrassing steps to bring that about.

In April, a group of Democrats met to introduce their plan to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court, but Nancy Pelosi indicated she had no plan to bring it to the floor for a vote.

Earlier this month, Democrats floated a scenario of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer stepping down, thus paving the way for President Biden to nominate a left-leaning individual to replace him.

With court confirmations a role of the Senate Judiciary Committee, one would have thought that Democrat leadership would have assigned one of its  mouthpieces, like Senators Dianne Feinstein, Richard Blumenthal, Cory Booker, or even the chairman himself, Pat Leahy, to speak for the party to convince Breyer that he should retire for the good of the party.

One can only assume the senators wanted no part of such a scheme.

However, New York House freshman, Rep. Mondaire Jones, in office for less than five months, was more than willing to take on that embarrassing assignment.

Imagine this … Jones, an openly gay member of Congress, is seemingly willing to say to Breyer, ‘we appreciate your help in delivering landmark rulings in favor of LGBTQ rights, but it’s time for you to go.’

“If Justice Breyer is to be committed to his ideology,” said Jones, “he is going to want to be replaced on the bench by someone who is going to vote to uphold the fundamental right to vote in this country and to protect the rights of the most marginalized members of our society.”  Jones is urging the 82-year-old Breyer to retire in order to safeguard his seat with a new liberal justice.

Even the Biden White House believed it would be unseemly for Biden to suggest Breyer retire.  While White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that Biden believes retirement is Breyer’s choice, we know that he has been thinking about making a nomination.

While the effort to persuade Breyer to retire was in the news, the media surfaced Biden’s ridiculous pledge to nominate a black woman to the Court if and when he had the opportunity.

Demand Justice, a group pushing Breyer to step down, sponsored a black and neon-green billboard truck circling the Supreme Court with the message: “Breyer retire, It’s time for a Black woman Supreme Court Justice.”

They’re hoping Breyer will concede and announce his retirement at the end of the Court’s term in June, when past justices have announced their retirements.  Jones predicts that if Breyer decides not to retire, “there will be a chorus of Democrats calling on him to do the right thing and be a good steward of our democracy.”

AN ASSOCIATED CONCERN involves several key aging Democrat senators, who “at any moment,” the New York Times reported, could force the Senate to fall into Republican hands. “Two members of the majority are near or just over 80 years old,” the Times wrote.

There have been concerns over the health of Leahy, 81, who has been hospitalized, and Feinstein, who is 87.

“In other words, Democrats are one stopped heartbeat away from losing the chance to replace Breyer with a young progressive,” noted John Sexton in his piece, “Democratic Death Watch,” in PJ Media.

Elaborating on the situation, the Times surfaced the possibility that Biden’s entire agenda could come to a grinding halt if the wrong people were to die suddenly.  They’re also concerned if a senator winds up hospitalized

“Our ability to make good on Biden’s agenda is pretty much dangling by a thread,” said Brian Fallon, a former aide to Chuck Schumer, who is now executive director of Demand Justice, the organization driving a mobile billboard pushing Breyer to retire.

With Kamala waiting in the wings, Democrats have avoided showing any concern over their aged president, who repeatedly shows signs of not being up to the job, but their devious minds are working overtime conjuring preparations for “what if” scenarios that could disrupt their hold on power.

Now, more than ever … may God continue to bless the United States of America.
