Weather vs Climate … Our Woke Universities … and the Sorry State of the Fourth Estate

Commentary

President Biden was in Massachusetts Wednesday toying around with the idea of declaring a climate emergency.  A real emergency calls for immediate action.

“If this is an emergency, call 911.”

But when the president says, “Let me be clear, climate change is an emergency,” he allows that “in the coming weeks, I’m going to use the power I have as president to turn these words into format, official government actions …”

While he talks about heatwaves and drought, no one reminds him that these are short-term atmospheric conditions of weather.  Climate changes are measured long-term.

Convinced that he can be the savior of the world, he’s using the UN’s “code red for humanity” scare as he insists that he will “not take no for answer” in tackling climate change.  “Our children and grandchildren are counting on us.”

“We’ve been tracking temperatures for about 170 years.  The earth is 4.5 billion years old.  Every time someone says, “Hottest day ever,” that person is lying to you,” notes the Bookworm Room.

While Biden and the progressive left seek to end the use of fossil fuels and prematurely transition to renewables like wind and solar all in the name of altering climate, they refuse to recognize how fossil fuels underlie every single aspect of our lives.

“There is nothing you eat, use, look at, wear, live in, travel with, or anything else that isn’t completely dependent on fossil fuels,” the Bookworm states.  “Remove those fossil fuels and you are suddenly returned to a life in a wood or dirt shelter with only the most limited food and clothing, and really nothing else,” he adds.

Biden and his minions – John Kerry, Gina McCarthy, Jennifer Granholm, Pete Buttigieg and a host of bureaucrats in the EPA and the Departments of Energy and Transportation continue to scare us with tales of doom for our planet.

Beware the pending climate emergency declaration that will surely have a monetary cost and a loss of comfort in our way of life.

Our Universities of Woke

On July 12, 2022, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff declared that it will soon mandate students to take four diversity, equity and inclusion courses grounded in “critical theory” to earn a degree.

The new graduation requirement is scheduled to take effect in 2024 at the university of 29,000 students in the progressive city of Flagstaff.

Is it any wonder why I lost in my campaign for the Flagstaff City Council in 2004?

Then, on July 20, 2022, Indiana University’s medical school stated that it will require professors to prove a commitment to “diversity, equity, inclusion as part of their evaluations.

Meanwhile, at the Woked University of Michigan, people are up in arms over Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh for speaking out for right to life.

“I believe in having the courage to let the unborn be born … I love life.  I believe in having a loving care and respect for life and death,” he said. “My faith and my science are what drives these beliefs in me.

“In God’s plan, each unborn human truly has a future filled with potential, talent, dreams and love … I have living proof in my family, my children, and the many thousands that I have coached that the unborn are amazing gifts from God to make this a better place.  To me, the right choice is to have the courage to the unborn be born.”

The left-leaning Palmer Report tweeting @PalmerReport: “No one who actively attempts to deny women their basic rights should ever be allowed to hold a position of influence at a public university.  That includes University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh and his anti-woman fundraising.  He’s a public employee.  Fire his ass.”

Levon Satamian at Red State notes that the University of Michigan and others allow leftist extremists to say and do whatever they want, but if anyone disagrees or dares to give their opinion on a topic, they are called out, criticized and cancelled because they exercise their First Amendment rights.

Jim will be on the sidelines when the Wolverines open their season this fall.

The State of the Fourth Estate

“I Was Wrong About Trump Voters,” published New York Times columnist Bret Stephens.

“The worst line I ever wrote as a pundit,” begins, “If by now you don’t find Donald Trump appalling, you’re appalling.”

Recalling it was his opening salvo in August 2015, the first of dozens of columns he would write denouncing Trump as a unique threat to American life, democratic ideals and the world itself.

While he doesn’t regret what he said about Trump himself, he does the “broad swipe” at his voters and how he caricatured them.

Regular readers of kramerontheright will recall my frequent mentions of the assault by Stephens and others on Trump supporters.

He concedes that he and his friend, columnist Peggy Noonan, belonged to an elite class, living in safe, pleasant neighborhoods with excellent public schools.  Trump’s appeal was to people, many of them “have-nots” in flyover country.

They didn’t appreciate being treated as losers and racists – “clinging to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren’t like them”- an Obama phrase.

“I could have thought a little harder about the fact that, in my dripping condescension toward his supporters, I was also confirming their suspicions of people like me.”

But morally speaking, Stephens says he would question Trump supporters who want him back in the White House.  As if their care.

The Formerly Prestigious Pulitzer

Challenged to defend the truth in reporting by the New York Times and the Washington Post in their Pulitzer Prize wins in 2018, the board of the formerly prestigious award announced the awards would stand after two independent reviews were commissioned to assess the reporting

The two papers won the awards for reporting on Russian interference in the U.S. election and its connections to the Trump campaign.

In challenging the awards, RealClearInvestigations wrote of untrue statements in the reporting by Times and Post authors.  The board refused to release the findings by the independent reviews.  What does that tell you?

Is it any wonder that the media is no longer trusted by the majority of Americans?

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
