A Late-Night Television Host Says It All

Commentary

By now you have either read or heard about those 37 counts in the indictment of former President Trump, from statements claiming its damning and he’s toast to the weakness of the case.

He has been accused of obstruction, in violation of the 1917 Espionage Act, and other assorted actions, and we’ve heard the arguments for and against those charges, however, to put it simply:

“The crime is being Donald Trump.” – Greg Gutfeld, host of “Gutfeld!”

Then there’s the commentary by Alan M. Dershowitz, professor emeritus at Harvard Law School, a Democrat, in his Wall Street Journal op-ed.  He concedes that Special Counsel Jack Smith “has made a stronger case against Mr. Trump than many observers, including me, expected.

“The question remains; is it strong enough to justify an indictment of the leading candidate to challenge the president in next year’s election.

ALAN DERSHOWITZ (The Daily Wire)

“When an incumbent administration prosecutes the leading candidate against the president, it should have a case that is so compelling that it attracts the kind of bipartisan support that forced President Nixon to resign.

“No such support is currently apparent, since many Republicans continue to be troubled by the targeting of Mr. Trump.  Mr. Smith will have to convince not only a Miami jury but the American public, on both sides of the partisan divide.”

So How Does It Look?

The news source AXIOS reports that “New criminal charges haven’t changed Republicans’ view of Trump, polls say.”

In its report, they note that an ABC News/Ipsos survey on Sunday found that 80 percent of polled Republicans said they believe the charges against Trump are politically motivated.

In the CBS News/YouGov poll published on Sunday, 61 percent of polled Republican voters said the indictment did not change the way they viewed Trump while 80 percent of Republicans say he should still be able to assume office if he is convicted and wins the 2024 election.  Seventy-six percent of the respondents to this poll also viewed the charges as politically motivated.

This poll revealed that Trump has a 38-point lead, 61 to 23 percent edge, over Ron DeSantis.

LUNTZ IN LONDON (Ben Page photo)

Meanwhile, pollster Frank Luntz, has seemingly had an epiphany.  While he said he would “bet on him (Trump) losing to whatever Democrat nominee there was” during his appearance on “Sway,” a New York Times podcast last month, speaking at the UK Centre for Policy Studies’ Margaret Thatcher Conference on Tuesday, he said, “I now have to acknowledge that it is a distinct possibility that Donald Trump could be elected president.”

He foolishly followed by stating that the “US democracy could collapse if Trump was reinstated by the American people,” based on his belief that there’s a 15 percent likelihood of that destroying American democracy.“

I wonder, has Luntz not seen how the Deep State and the Biden administration has already severely damaged our democracy?

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
