On This Fourth of July, Is It Any Wonder Patriotism in America has Diminished?

Commentary

I used to view the Fourth of July as the day we celebrate our patriotism, the day we recognize our independence as a nation, but things have changed.

Oh, there will be fireworks where it is permitted, lots of flags, and perhaps a small parade here and there, and mattress firms and car dealers will be advertising their blockbuster sales, but today, patriotism holds less importance to too many Americans.

It isn’t surprising that only 23 percent of adults under age 30 believe patriotism to be very important to them personally.  While free speech is being challenged on our campuses, and American flags are removed from classrooms, traditional history of our nation has been replaced by critical race theory and gender studies. And we are graduating students who cannot read or write.

Surprisingly, however, just 59 percent of Americans 65 years of age and over hold patriotism as less important today.  They watch as statues of Columbus, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are removed from public places and the rainbow flag of the pride movement is flown from the White House.

As I observe what has happened in our nation in just the past few years, those statistics shouldn’t come as a surprise.  It is so disheartening.

Going into the holiday weekend, the State Department released its report on the August 2021 chaotic withdrawal of Afghanistan, that resulted in the inexcusable death of 13 U.S. service members. President Biden defended his actions, saying “I was right.”

Many foreign policy experts believe that Biden’s weakness in that withdrawal provided Russia’s Putin with the impetus to attempt to overrun Ukraine.  Our involvement, providing billions of dollars in weaponry and other aid has caused many Americans to question that investment.

Meanwhile, China, too, seems to have seized on Biden’s lack of leadership sidling up with Putin on Ukraine and with bold moves by its military in the South Seas and regular intimidation of Taiwan, while increasing its surveillance of the U.S.

They’ve purchased nearly a half million acres of farm land in the U.S., often near our military bases and is moving toward establishing a surveillance base in Cuba, less than a hundred miles from our coast.

Yet President Biden continues to consider China a competitor rather than an aggressor.  How foolish.

The Court Decisions …

Student loan forgiveness was doomed before it got to the Court.  Even then Speaker Pelosi, his chief water carrier, said two years ago he “does not have the statutory authority to cancel, compromise, discharge, or forgive, on a blanket or mass basis, principal balances of student loans or to materially modify the repayment amounts or term thereof.”

After Congress rebuffed Biden’s proposal to cancel student debt, he exceeded the powers of his office by using the obscure 2003 Heroes Act and falsely claimed he created loan forgiveness through executive action, all in an effort to gain the young vote.

As demonstrators outside the Supreme Court held signs stating that “Student debt is a gender & racial equity issue,” Grandpaw Biden had to take a slap at the Court for “misinterpreting the Constitution.”  He’s a fine one to talk.  And the left is again talking about packing the Court.

Chief Justice Roberts shot back with “It has become a disturbing feature of some recent opinions to criticize the decisions with which they disagree as going beyond the proper role of the judiciary.”

But that didn’t stop Justice Brown Jackson, who dissented in the Affirmative Action decision, saying, “deeming race irrelevant in law does not make it so in life.”

Two prominent blacks, Justice Clarence Thomas and Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, shredded her dissent, with Sears noting, “What you have is the justice who was chosen because she’s black and now because she’s a woman.”

Our Disgraceful Justice

It should be clear to all of you that we have a two-tier justice system that would willingly charge you with lying and send you to jail for crimes, while a select group of elites get a pass.  Attorney General Garland and FBI Director Wray, and their cadre within the Deep State need to go, but that’s not going to happen until January 2025.

The Climate Change Hoax

We have lost our energy independence and the jobs that supported that industry to a trillion-dollar fabricated scheme to alter climate change by going electric, insisting that wind and solar can provide the energy generation of our country, while the administration loans billions of dollars for the development of car batteries.

Domestic Terrorism

Complete disrespect of others was evidenced in those Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis and Waukesha riots where government and private property was destroyed in the name of George Floyd.

It continues today as lone individuals and rampaging groups are allowed to freely loot high-end clothing stores and neighborhood drug stores.

There’s More

Illegals … While our administration is welcoming millions of illegal migrants with promises of asylum, the cost of their welfare – food, health care and education – is borne by we taxpayers.

Homeless … Blocks of homeless encampments now plague our major cities – New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and even San Diego – where Democrat governors and mayors are unwilling to deal with them.  Already having received millions of dollars in federal aid for the homeless, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is now seeking aid from FEMA, the agency established to handle natural disasters.  No way.

The Gender issue … We have permitted a fringe group of a small minority of transgender individuals to disrupt our daily lives.  President Biden invited them to celebrate on the White House lawn, where a number of them disrobed for media cameras.

In Michigan, their House of Representatives passed a bill last week that makes it a felony to cause someone to feel threatened by someone who simply uses the wrong gender pronouns.  Incredible!

And finally … as Americans attempt to put their sick nation out of their minds, trying to enjoy their holiday weekend, our corrupt first family is enjoying their freedom at Camp David.  A president, like any parent, can privately be proud of his son, but does he have to flout it, inviting him to state dinners and other events?

I didn’t mean to put a damper on your holiday, but I wanted this to be a wake-up to remind you of the importance that you commit to restoring sanity on November 5, 2024, so that when we can appropriately celebrate our 250th birthday in 2026. A recent poll revealed that at least 48 percent of you believe the best is yet to come.  That’s somewhat encouraging for we glass half-full individuals.

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
