Two Far-Fetched Stories on the Political Scene

Commentary

Columnist Off Base

When I read the headline, “It’s Time for President Harris,” over Holman W. Jenkins, Jr’s column in the Wall Street Journal, I was naturally curious because he’s usually quite objective, but I admit I was disappointed.

After a convoluted analogy of the war in Ukraine to North Korea with his view of NATO, he blames the “stumbling” in Ukraine on an “unserious Republican Congress” and a Democrat president who, “unable to show himself, can’t perform the necessary predicate of rallying the public.”

For Jenkins, that means, “it’s time for Mr. Biden to step aside is now,” believing that “in Kamala Harris, Americans might discover a forerunner of a new breed of Democrat who actually believes in jailing criminals.”

What that has to do with the war analogy is missing to me, besides, her record of justice while California’s attorney general was spotty.  Her decision not to pursue the death penalty in the killing of San Francisco police officer resulted in her being shunned by the police union.

Advocating the punishment of parents of students caught for constant truancy, while admirable, but Jenkins seems to think she’s the answer to the blatant criminal cases we are witnessing daily in America.

As vice president, I haven’t seen her take on this issue.  In fact, we are now seeing the consequence of her inability to secure our border, a failure that has resulted in unvetted migrants committing crimes across the nation.

“If nothing else,” wrote Jenkins, “President Harris would bring to the table a quality missing in the current to front-runners.  She would have to live in the world made on her watch.”

Too far-fetched for me.

Sorry, Mr. Jenkins.  Instead of selecting someone qualified to assume the presidency, Biden’s choice of Harris merely enabled him to check off two boxes – woman and black – now you want us to make the same mistake.  No.

Incidentally, I doubt if she could have pointed out the location of Ukraine on a map prior to our involvement there; perhaps she still can’t.

Former President Trump may select a woman to be his running mate, too, however, the women on the short list are all more qualified than Harris.

Trump Knows the Constitution

I’m sure those in the anti-Trump crowd were surprised when they saw him pull a note from his suit pocket and read aloud its contents during Laura Ingraham’s Tuesday night show from Greenville, South Carolina, because it was the wording from Amendment VIII of the Constitution, and it’s the Constitution that many unfairly say he’s attempting to destroy.

I’m also sure that many of you, like me, were unaware of Amendment VIII.  It reads: “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted.

About the Excessive Fine

Interesting, considering the New York civil case ordering $355 million in fines, a dollar amount so far-fetched that it’s higher than the GNP of some countries, despite no one being defrauded, it is driving out its most productive, tax-producing citizens and businesses.

So, as Trump’s attorneys make their next move in an appeal, the excessive fine has stirred New York corporate CFOs to consider what’s ahead.

After more than 200 years in the Empire State, Remington is moving its gun factory from New York’s Mohawk Valley to Georgia.  When the company leaves it will be like part of your family has left.  In a number of families, several generations have worked at Remington.

It has left New York’s Democrat Gov. Hochul backtracking after congratulating DA Letitia James, assuring businesses that the same thing can’t happen to them.

Because the laws apply differently to Trump.  Right?

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
