Within minutes of the verdict that former President Trump had been found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records, Michael Taylor, Communications Director for Biden-Harris 2024, issued a statement on behalf of the campaign.
Even though he represents President Biden, who is running for reelection in opposition to Donald Trump, and entitled make a statement that favors his candidate, as a former communications director, I found his choice of words uncalled for; after all he was referring to a former president of the United States, where was the respect for the presidency?
Here is the transcript of his statement with my remarks in bold italic.
“In New York today, we saw that no one is above the law.
“Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his own personal gain.” Mr. Trump never stated that he believed that because he did not break the law for his own personal gain.
“But today’s verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality. There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box. Convicted fellow or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president. Mr. Trump agrees, “the real verdict is going to be Nov. 5 by the people and they know what happened here and everybody knows what happened here.”
“The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater. He is running an increasingly unhinged campaign of revenge and retribution, pledging to be a dictator ‘on day one’ and calling for the Constitution to be ‘terminated’ so he can regain and keep power. That’s odd, since Mr. Trump said after the verdict, “I’m fighting for our country. I’m fighting for our Constitution.”
Regarding Mr. Taylor’s statement that Mr. Trump is “running an increasingly unhinged campaign of revenge and retribution,” he knows better. Mr. Trump stated he doesn’t want to hurt President Biden, and has repeatedly said that his retribution would be his “success.”
As for Mr. Trump’s dictator for the day remark – that was said jokingly and Mr. Taylor knows it. He was referring to correcting Biden’s immigration rules and restoring our energy independence by calling for drilling.
“A second Trump term means chaos, ripping away Americans’ freedoms and fomenting political violence – and American people will reject it this November.” Any chaos will be the result of the politicization of our justice system that Mr. Trump will need to address. Rather than “ripping away Americans’ freedoms,” Mr. Trump will restore the lost freedoms of the Biden era – no EV mandates and the crippling of our oil and gas industry. The American people will not reject it.
If President Biden refers to former President Trump as a convicted felon, he is making a big mistake.
May God continue to bless the United States of America.
