Here are my observations on some of the news of the day.
A MOVIE REVIEWER AT MARIE CLAIRE, the haughty woman’s international magazine, that normally focuses on health, beauty and culture, joined the liberal USA Today bemoaning the lack of women and actors of color in key roles in the movie, “Dunkirk,” calling it “an excuse for men to celebrate maleness.” Legitimate movie critics know history, and lauded the drama depicting the rescue of some 340,000 British and Allied troops caught behind enemy lines during World War II.
Given the origin of the magazine; published first in France in 1937, then in the UK in 1941 (the Dunkirk timeline), coupled with the 1942 Nazi order to cease publication, I imagine its founders, Jean Prouvost and Marcelle Auclair would be embarrassed by the Dunkirk review.
JOBS – Were you aware that there are about 30 million jobs in the U.S. that pay more than $35,000 a year for workers without four-year college degrees? Unfortunately, there are some 75 million U.S. workers without college degrees, according to The Wall Street Journal.
A RAISE FOR SOCIAL SECURITY RECIPIENTS, the biggest in six years, will give the average beneficiary about $30 more each month. The raise represents a 2.2 percent cost-of-living increase in 2018, the highest since 2011.
WOULD YOU BELIEVE HILLARY WANTS TO PREACH? No, not the liberal prattle we heard during her 2016 campaign; like a minister. “Scattered bits of reporting suggest that ministry has always been a secret dream, “ according to Emma Green’s piece in The Atlantic, “Hillary Wants to Preach.”
Green recounts a 1994 interview by former Newsweek editor Kenneth Woodward during which Hillary told him that she thought “all the time” about becoming an ordained Methodist minister.
“Now, as Clinton works to rehabilitate her public image and figure out the next steps after her brutal November loss,” writes Green, “religion is taking a central role.”
“Early in her career, Clinton learned the dangers of speaking publicly about her religious beliefs,” writes Green, “When she was First Lady, progressives roundly mocked her moralism, and conservatives doubted her sincerity.”
Democrats are generally cool to religious beliefs.
Most of us remember how former President Obama once mocked people of religion with his comment about people in small towns who “cling to their guns and religion.”
Then there was Hillary’s campaign communications director, Jennifer Palmieri, who caused a stir when she suggested that prominent Catholics who are associated with conservative political causes chose to be Catholic only because “they think it is the more socially acceptable politically conservative religion. Their rich friends wouldn’t understand if they became Evangelicals.”
During her recent campaign, Hillary saved religious messages for her appearances in black churches.
“It was baffling to me that so many other Americans … didn’t accept that she was a Christian,” commented Kristin Du Mez, a Calvin College professor.
It’s quite simple, Kristin, people just didn’t know what to believe about Hillary.
“In sharing her faith, perhaps Clinton sees something left to win, whether political or personal. There are no more voters left to lose,” says Green.
You can believe that anything she does will have a political calculation. I don’t expect we’ll soon see Rev. Hillary Clinton.
JIM ACOSTA, CNN’s senior White House correspondent was the victim of a major takedown by White House Advisor Stephen Miller over his ignorance of immigration basics. If you missed it, click here.
Later, making an on-camera appearance on the White House lawn, charged that the Trump administration is obsessed with the “three M’s” – Muslims, Mexicans and the Media.
When comedian and talk show host Dave Rubin heard that, he said Acosta forgot, “me,” adding it’s always about him. You may recall, that it was Acosta that jabbed his finger at White House press spokesman Sean Spicer in the first 100 days.
TRUMP’S LEAK DILEMMA – Obama holdovers making up the Deep State like nothing better than to embarrass the president in their effort to bring down the presidency with leaks. On the receiving end of the leaks, the media is more than happy to publish and/or broadcast information in the leaks in vengeance for the president’s insults of fake news.
Stopping the leaks is vital to the success of the president’s agenda.
