As long as I have been interested in politics, I have been confounded by the Jewish support of Democrats.
While doing some research, the headline, “Poll: Jews strongly back Democrats in 2018 midterms,” caught my attention. And again, my curiosity.
The poll, reported in Arutz Sheva, an Israel international news online site, says the Jewish Electoral Institute, founded by Jewish Democrats, revealed that respondents favor Democrats over Republicans 74 to 28.
Oddly, respondents are evenly divided on Trump’s policies, with 51 percent approving and 49 percent not approving, yet just 25 percent said they approve of the job he is doing, while 75 percent disapprove.
More confusion emerges with the findings that show overwhelming support for Israel among Jewish Americans by 92 percent, however, just 52 percent ranked Israel as “very important” in the poll.
I must admit that I continue to be confused. I sought insight from a Republican Jewish friend (yes, there are some), only to hear the same old story – “the children of the immigrants grew up basically following their parents and voted Democrat, and so did their children.” Why?
Millions of non-Jewish Americans grew up with parents who voted Democrat. My own parents worshipped Franklyn D. Roosevelt, but when I left home my thinking became more conservative and I registered Republican.
My friend spoke of three well-educated nephews with successful medical and law practices, who he considers to be far left Democrats. One of the more reasonable nephews, he claims, rejects the Republican philosophy, but cannot elucidate that belief.
“I believe the majority of Jews today lean left because their parents and grandparents claimed the Democrat Party was the party of the people and will always be there in times of need,” said my friend. “They believe the Republicans are the party of wealth and want to control all of it in the U.S.”
Some of the wealthiest people in the United States, however, are Democrats – Gates, Buffett, Zuckerberg, Bloomberg and Soros.
President Trump has a close relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu; more over he fulfilled his campaign promise to move our embassy to Jerusalem, while previous Democrat presidents promised, and failed.
Surely, that should gain the Trump administration Jewish support in the midterms and in 2020. Don’t bet on it. Remember, Jews voted 91 percent for Hillary Clinton and voted for such Democrat misfits as Carter, Dukakis, Obama, Kerry and Gore.
