Here are my observations and opinions on my selected news of the day.
HERE’S A LAUGHER – The partisan MSNBC, with leftist host Stephanie Ruhle, invited the partisan historian Jon Meacham, to tell viewers what the Democrats are doing in the House is not partisan.
Meacham has made frequent negative comments about President Trump, including a reference to him as one of the most racist presidents in history.
Comparing the Democrat closed-door inquiry of Trump to the Bill Clinton impeachment, Meacham made the laughable claim that, “The Clinton process was ferociously partisan, I personally don’t think this one feels that way.”
For readers who are not familiar with Meacham, he once said, “Barack Obama is many things; among them, he is tough and even ferocious political warrior.”
Unashamedly, Meacham used his eulogy at the funeral for the late John McCain to mock President Trump.
YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP – When President Trump tweeted that we are witnessing “a lynching,” while referring to the House’s closed-door inquiry, the Democrat candidates didn’t hesitate to call it “beyond disgraceful” (Warren), “beyond shameful” (Castro), and “(he’s) invoking the pain and trauma of lynching to whitewash (his) own corruption” (Harris).
You just knew that there would be a flurry of research on others who have used the word lynching. Tyler O’Neil of PJ Media published a list of 10 politicians who used the word “lynching” like Trump.
Perhaps the best example of hypocrisy came from Apology Joe Biden. “Impeachment is not ‘lynching.’ It is part of our Constitution,“ Biden tweeted. “Our country has a dark, shameful history with lynching, and to even think about making this comparison is abhorrent. It’s despicable.”
However, in 1998, Biden said, “Even if the President (Clinton) should be impeached, history is going to question whether or not this was just a partisan lynching …” recalls Matt Margolis of PJ Media.
Democrat Rep. Jerry Nadler, in October 1998, told the Associated Press that Republicans were “running a lynch mob” against Clinton.
Former Rep. Christopher Shays (R-CT), in 2016, accused Trump of egging on the lynching … of Hillary Clinton.
Naturally, everyone was quick to recall the shameful lynchings of blacks, racism, but there are no references to the lynchings of the Old West for stealing a man’s horse or rustling his cattle.
HATS OFF to Republican members of the House, who apparently have had enough and Wednesday insisted on being admitted to the basement SCIF room where Democrats were taking testimony. Republicans are not allowed to see any documents unless they are accompanied by a Democrat “minder.”
AND ALSO, TO Senate Republicans, under the leadership of Sen. Lindsay Graham, who is rounding up sponsors for his bill to force the impeachment inquiry into the open.
SAY IT ISN’T SO, MIKE – I believe President Trump has a top-notch guy as secretary of state in Mike Pompeo. You know his resume … first in his class at West Point, served as director of the CIA and six years in the House of Representative.
Now there’s speculation that he’s considering a run for the Senate in Kansas because he has made several trips there on behalf of the Trump administration.
“I think the only one not talking about my Kansas Senate run is me,” Pompeo said.
“ELIZABETH WARREN SAYS Her Favorite Place Is Waffle House,” read the headline on David Rutz’s piece in the Washington Free Beacon extra newsletter.
When I read that, I thought if that’s true, she can’t be all that bad. When I was still working, members of my staff held a surprise 50th birthday party for me at a Waffle House in Phoenix. The nice folks there even printed a special menu with a caricature of me. And, I have enjoyed other visits to Waffle House locations.
But when I read further, Rutz pours cold water on her claim as an obvious pandering statement to make everyone believe that she’s one of us, as she is heard on cell phone call saying, “I’m down here at the Waffle House.”
Could it be that Atlanta, the site of the next Democrat debate, is home to more Waffle House’s than any other city? One can question the sincerity of her “favorite place” claim since there are no WH locations in her home state of Massachusetts.
Now that it has been determined that Waffle House’s political action committee has donated more than $220,000 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee since 2012, and contributed $50,000 to Conservative Georgia Action Fund, which is backing Republican Sen. David Perdue, you can expect Warren to find a “new favorite place.”
BUT, BUT, BUT WHAT ABOUT CHINA? While the environmentalists on the left are still trying to shut down our coal mines and coal-fired utilities, as meager as they are, with no consideration of those who come from families who have known only mining as a living.
Meanwhile, China is expanding its coal power infrastructure despite pledges to curb carbon emissions, and has allocated funds for 17 new coal mines. There are more than 3,000 coal mines in China, which accounts for more than 40 per cent of the world’s coal-fired power stations, according to Amy Hawkins, reporting in The Times of London.
IS WARREN GUILTY OF PLAGERISM? – Well maybe not, but when reporters asked Elizabeth Warren why voters should have confidence in her Medicare for All plan that is sure to increase middle-class taxes, if she needs a couple more weeks to tell them how it’s going to get paid, she replied, “Well, why don’t you ask me that when the plan is out?
Sounds a bit like the words of Nancy Pelosi, when questioned about ObamaCare, said “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it away from the fog of controversy.”
IT’S MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE to fund the Democrat’s signature health insurance program Medicare for All without dramatically raising middle-class taxes, reports the Committee for a Responsible Budget, a bipartisan think tank in Washington DC.
Those who are falling for the socialist spin that they will soak the rich to pay for it, think again. Think again. The committee reports that even the most aggressive taxes levied on high-income earners and businesses would only cover 40 percent of the total costs required to fund the proposal, according to Tristan Justice in The Federalist.
“There is simply not enough available revenue from high earners and businesses to cover the full cost of eliminating premiums, ending all cost-sharing, and expanding coverage to all Americans and for (virtually) all health services,” the authors wrote.
Even confiscating every dollar Americans earn over $200,000 (more than a stretch) would only cover half of the leftist agenda for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, a universal basic income, socialized college and other programs being proposed, according to David Burton at the Heritage Foundation.
IN A LETTER TO THE EDITOR of the Arizona Republic, Gary Yohe of Phoenix writes: “Democrats will use anything to try to bring down President Trump. At present we have congressional Democrats attempting a bloodless coup. Using secret testimony backed by selective leaks and a media colluding with them as if this is normal.
“Well it isn’t constitutional and turns our justice system into the old English system of proving your innocence. Russian collusion, pre-presidential infidelity, 20-year-old business practices, and now a phone call that all can be read as somehow forbidden quid pro quo.
“What’s next? Wearing a red tie to the G-7 is a sign of treason? Wake up America. This is wrong and must end!”
AND FINALLY, Allahpundit reports that Democrat presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard is “milking this Hillary feud for all it’s worth, for perfectly sound reasons. The obvious thing to do for a candidate who’s struggled to get traction in the primary is to accept the gift Clinton gave her when she called her a “Russian asset.”
Gabbard tweeted @TulsiGabbard, “Hillary, your foreign policy was a disaster for our country and the world. It’s time for you to acknowledge the damage you have caused and step down from your throne.”
