The foolish Democrats gamble … the death knell for journalism’s future … opinions of Lindsey Graham differ with two columnists … and another Great Truth

Here are my observations and opinions on my select news of the day.

THOSE FOOLISH DEMOCRATS resume their quest Wednesday to prove many of the nation’s legal minds wrong, believing that President Trump is guilty of a high crime or misdemeanor worthy of impeachment.

“All this discussion of a quid pro quo is really a smokescreen,” says Robert G. Natelson, a constitutional scholar with the Independence Institute, a libertarian think tank in Denver.  “Even if it were a quid pro quo, I think it is rather clearly neither a felony nor a misdemeanor.”

“It is not a breach of fiduciary duty for a president to make aid to another country conditional, and it is certainly not a breach of fiduciary duty for the president to ask the other country to investigate possible involvement in an American election,” said Natelson. “The president always has the authority to make aid conditional as part of American foreign policy.”

Scoffing at the suggestion that the Biden’s were off limits, Natelson said, it would be “absolutely appropriate” for Mr. Trump to request an investigation if the Biden family was suspected of corruption in Ukraine.

THE DEATH OF JOURNALISM has been reported here with evidence on a number of occasions.  Now, I regret to inform you of another sign that there’s no hope for its future.

At Northwestern University, home of the Medill School of Journalism, one of the most highly-regarded journalism schools in the nation, it’s student newspaper, The Daily Northwestern, published an editorial that took political correctness to a new level.

In an editorial, co-signed by nine of its editors, they declared the paper will no longer fully report on campus events if the reporting runs the risk of making marginalized students feel unsafe or upset.  You can’t make this stuff up.

“The incident that generated this sniveling, embarrassing apology was a recent visit to the campus by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions,” according to Robby Soave of Reason magazine.  Sessions was there to speak to the College Republicans.

Sessions’ appearance brought out the usual student activists to protest his speech, objecting to the Trump administration’s treatment of immigrants.

The activists let the paper know that its coverage was not aligned with their views, and as a result they caved to their unreasonable demands.

In its sappy editorial, the editors said they were “grappling with the impact of (the) event,” and “we are figuring out how we can support each other and our communities through distressing experiences that arise on campus.”

The paper’s pathetic editorial is too lengthy to publish here, but you can read it in its entirety by CLICKING HERE.

FLASHBACK – On September 7, 2017, I wrote of Pete Vernon’s article in the Columbia Journalism Review, in which he stated, “Climate change made (Hurricane) Harvey more dangerous,” as j-students were told to tie climate change to Hurricane Harvey.”

WILLIAM MC GURN (cfact.org)

TWO COLUMNISTS, OPPOSITE VIEWPOINTS – “Not long ago, anyone who predicted that Sen. Lindsey Graham would become Donald Trump’s biggest defender would have been thought certifiable cuckoo,” writes William McGurn column in the Wall Street Journal, “Lindsay Graham to the Rescue.”

McGurn writes of Graham and Trump being bitter rivals for the presidency in 2016, where name-calling was exchanged between the pair.  “Mr. Graham gave as good as he got,” and even said that “if Republicans nominated him (Trump) the party would lose the ‘moral authority’ to govern.”

“But that was then,” says McGurn, as he relates how Graham has loudly and publicly questioned the legitimacy of the House impeachment effort.

By looking past the drama, he came to appreciate the results Mr. Trump delivered, according to McGurn.  “The Democrats have driven me into his camp as much as anybody else,” said Graham, “after a while you say ‘enough already,’ right?”

Regular readers will recall that I have written about the importance of each Republican member of the Senate and House to support their duly elected president.

E.J. MONTINI (arizonarepublic)

Then there’s the other columnist, the left-leaning E. J. Montini of the Arizona Republic, who doesn’t see it that way.  He has written several scathing pieces against Republican Sen. Martha McSally over her support of the president.   He’s never gotten over Governor Doug Ducey’s nomination of her to the late John Mc Cain’s seat.

“We now know that Lindsey Graham was scamming John McCain,” is the headline of Montini’s Tuesday column, in which he questions “what happened to Graham, once the dear friend and protégé of Sen. John McCain.”

Obviously, Montini wants to see the Trump presidency fail, and he see’s Graham’s support a slap in the face of the late McCain. “Without McCain around, Graham resurrected himself as a Trump sycophant.  He decided that for personal political purposes he needed to be someone else,” commented Montini.

Does Montini need another reminder that his hero, McCain, disgraced his party with that “thumbs down” vote on the repeal of ObamaCare for his own personal political purpose – vengeance against the man, who insulted his POW stint.

It must gall Montini that it will be Graham, who, as Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, will control the impeachment process in the Senate.

ANOTHER GREAT TRUTH:  If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it’s free!” –P. J. O’Rourke

May God continue to bless the United States of America.
