Commentary
During the 2020 presidential campaign, there was a lot of talk about the need to replace the Twitter-happy guy in the White House and bring decency back; forget all of that he achieved while being constantly harassed with that Russian collusion hoax.
We frequently heard the tired plea from the left, ‘we need to have an adult in the White House.’ Michelle Obama said it in the 2016 campaign, and it came true, Donald Trump won, except the adult she was campaigning for was Hillary Clinton.
The archives are filled with the quotes, mostly from the left, politicians. But I chose to reprise the quote from Holly Robinson, the novelist who wrote, “Folly Cove.”
Why Robinson? I thought, anyone who could write a sappy novel about the complexities of a new England family – the Bradfords – with plenty of secrets as they search for love, forgiveness, and second chances, would be better than one those Beltway bozos.
Besides, her mother and father were Republicans and she claims not to be knee-jerk liberal. She even said she knew that “Trump didn’t create the racists, misogynists, nationalists, fear-mongers and conspiracy theorists in this country.”
The day after Joe Biden’s inauguration, she wrote a commentary entitled, “A Return To Leadership By Example,” in which she conceded that she “didn’t pop any champagne to celebrate President Joe Biden taking office,” and added that she was “too exhausted and wary to feel truly elated.”
She wrote about Biden’s first days in office, “promising us everything from a Covid-19 recovery plan to immigration reform and a new focus on climate change,” and added “Trump entered the White House with big plans to make America great, too. So what’s different?
I’d like to know what she thinks today,14 months later.
Okay, so what was her “adult in the White House” reference?:
“At the very least, we now have an actual adult in the White House, a man whose belief in social justice and big heart is evident in almost everything he does. A man who believes in democracy and has spent virtually his whole life serving the public.”
“We now have a president who promises us that tomorrow will be a better day. An adult who reminds us, through his own actions, of the fine arts of civility, compromise and being humble in the face of important work.
“A man whose love for his family and country will, I hope, inspire us to see the people we disagree with are not demons, but humans who need compassion and healing as much as we do.”
So much for the opinion of someone who writes sappy novels. In her mind, to be the adult in White Office you merely need be someone who loves his family and country, has a big heart, is civil, humble, compassionate, and eager to compromise. Oh, and be someone who has spent virtually is whole life serving the public.
How about promises kept?
Donald Trump may not have been seen as the adult in the room in everyone’s minds, but 74, 218,154 million adults voted to return him to office in 2020, more than 11 million who voted for him in 2016.
Now, more than ever … may God continue to bless the United States of America.
