Does the GOP really need to say what it is for?

Okay, okay, okay …. I understand what you’re saying. The Republican Party needs to say what it’s for; what it would do to return the government to the people.

With all of the reading and research I do, a close friend of mine continues to advise me – ME – as to what the GOP needs to do.   His latest push was to bring to my attention Peggy Noonan’s column, Republicans Need a Direction.

In effect, Noonan seems to foresee another 2012 election, when few people thought President Obama, with his lousy record, had a chance of winning. Mitt Romney won the initial debate hands down, but he listened to establishment advisors, who told him not to  attack and present a “nice guy” image.  That bad advice, a poor turnout of Republican voters, and another masterful get-out-the-vote by “team Obama” sunk the GOP.

Columnist Peggy Noonan’s pieces appear in the Wall Street Journal. (lonelyconservative.com)

“In a year when Republicans are operating in such an enviable political environment, why aren’t their U. S. Senate candidates holding big and impressive leads? Why does it look close? Why are party professionals getting worried?

The Democrat president is unpopular (again). What progress can be claimed in the economy is tentative, uneven, feels temporary. True, unemployment is bad and people who have jobs feel stressed and hammered by costs. Americans are less optimistic than they’ve ever been in the modern era, with right-track/wrong-track numbers upside down.  Scandals, war, uncertain (no) leadership – all this has yielded a sense the whole enterprise of the past six years just did not work.”

So wrote Noonan, adding, “If Republicans can’t make, catch and ride a wave in an environment like this, they’ve gone from being the stupid party to the stupid loser party.” Continue reading

GOP addresses women’s concerns; Dems fear strong female Republican candidates in mid-terms

It’s your body.  They want to take away your birth control.  They will repeal Roe v Wade.  They oppose equal pay for women.

They’re at it again.  Democrats, NOW, NARAL and other feminist groups. They’re following their belief that if you tell a lie enough times it eventually is believed to be the truth.  Their playbook, Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, says, “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.”

I’m not a woman, but if I was, this would be an outright insult to my intelligence.

A friend recently brought to my attention his concern that the GOP was ignoring the belief among women that Republicans were oblivious to issues of concern to women.  He cited an article about a study conducted by two Republican groups that painted a dismal picture of Republicans among women.

imagesT8YBR0JNThese groups, American Crossroads and the American Action Network,  well aware of how women voted in 2012, aanconducted the study not only to see if two more years under Obama changed their position, but to develop a strategy for addressing their concerns.  While married women clearly supported Mitt Romney, single women overwhelmingly supported the President in 2012.  The mere fact that Republicans undertook this study should tell skeptics that the party is aware of this shortcoming and should tell women, “yes we hear you.”

I’m confident that Republicans will be presenting ideas that could interest women to at least give the GOP a “fresh look.”  At the same time, however, it will be incumbent upon Republican candidates to neuter those claims quoted at the top of this post. Continue reading

Kerry, Clinton rank climate change #1 threat

Two former secretaries of state, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton took to microphones this past week to push their belief that climate change is a bigger threat than radical Muslim extremists, despite the fact that Americans disagree.

John Kerry turns to the Bible for guidance to push the threat of global climate change. (thefederalistpapers.org)

For Kerry, it was his second attempt to convince us.  On Feb. 16, 2014, speaking primarily to an audience of students in Jakarta, Kerry said “climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps the world’s most fearsome weapon of mass destruction.”  He went on to say that when he thinks of global threats – terrorism, epidemics, poverty, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction – the reality is that climate change ranks right up there with every single one of them.”

In Hawaii last month, Kerry called climate change “the biggest challenge of all that we face right now.”

On Sept. 2, 2014, at a ceremony to promote Shaarik Zafar, a Texas attorney, to be a special representative of the Muslim Communities, he said, “confronting climate change is, in the long run, one of the greatest challenges that we face, and you can see this duty or responsibility laid down the scriptures, clearly, beginning in Genesis.” Kerry believes our respect for God’s creation translates into a duty to protect and sustain His first creation, Earth.  Why did Kerry choose this venue to make this pronouncement?  He believes “Muslim-majority countries are among the most vulnerable” when it comes to the impact of climate change.”

And this is our foreign policy negotiator. Continue reading

Big government’s auto industry failures

For years I have criticized the government for its interference in the auto manufacturing business, from the ill-conceived café standards, the expediting of electric cars, the cash for clunkers program, and of course the auto bailout.  And, I have not forgotten CEO’s who became weak-kneed under big government pressure, put aside the free enterprise system and bowed to corporate welfare.

Two recent announcements appear to support my position.  On the heels of a study that labelled the Cash for Clunkers program a failure, comes a report that Cadillac can’t keep up with demand for its gas-guzzling Escalades, news that is sure to shake up environmentalists.

A National Bureau of Economic Research working paper has revealed facts that the $3 billion, yes billion, two-month government Cash for Clunkers program subtracted between $2.6 and $4 billion from the auto industry.  The program offered $4,500 if people turned in their old cars for destruction and bought a new car.

You will recall that goals were to lift manufacturers during the recession by subsidizing sales, while mollifying “greenies” by putting more fuel-efficient cars on the road. The report from a group of Texas A&M economists, shows that the subsidy didn‘t really create any extra auto business since those who participated were likely to purchase a car during that period anyway, and any environmental benefits couldn’t be justified. Obama’s dream world

“We have come a long way over the past five and a half years.  Our challenges are nowhere near as daunting as they were when I first came into office.”President Obama, Aug. 1, 2014

I came up out of my chair when I heard the president say that during his pre-vacation press conference on Friday, but there wasn’t a sound out of the dutiful press corps in the audience.

Really Mr. President?

Let’s look at the economy.  You said, “The good news is the economy clearly is getting stronger.  Things are getting better.”  And you claim “we’ve recovered faster and come farther from the recession than almost any other advanced country on Earth.”  Wrong.  We are mired in the slowest recovery ever!

What about the four per cent drop in real median household income under your watch, Mr. President?  And how about those 11 million workers who quit looking for work … the 11 million who went on food stamps … the increases in prices (food, gasoline and electricity)?  Growth is sluggish.

No, Mr. President, the economy is not looking up.  The national debt continues to climb and seniors have learned that Social Security will go broke in 2030, seven years sooner than when you took office. Continue reading

Newly found e-mails reveal Lois Lerner’s hostility toward conservatives

“So we don’t need to worry about alien terrorists.  It’s our own crazies (Republicans) that will take us down, “wrote Lois Lerner to a friend on Nov. 9, 2012.

“And I’m talking about the hosts of these shows.  The callers are rabid,” her friend responded.

Lois Lerner

Newly found e-mails reveal Lois Lerner’s hostility toward conservatives.

“Great.  Maybe we are through if there are that many (A) holes,” wrote Lerner.

“Well, you should hear the whacko wing of the GOP.  The US is through; too many foreigners suck the teat; time to hunker down, buy ammo and food for the end.  The right wing radio shows are scary to listen to,”  her friend continued.

Though seemingly trivial in nature, this e-mail exchange released Wednesday by the House Ways and Means Committee clearly reveals Lerner’s feelings toward conservative groups and singling them out for extra scrutiny.

“Lois Lerner’s exposed emails show the world she was and is a political hack driven by her own partisan agenda rather than a neutral public servant,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

“This email shows that Ms Lerner’s mistreatment of conservative groups was driven by her personal hostility toward conservatives,” wrote Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder as additional input for a criminal referral.

And let’s not forget this infamous quote on the IRS scandal:

“Not even a smidgeon of corruption,” President Obama, Feb. 2, 2014 Continue reading

Our inept, disgraceful president

The purpose of this commentary is not to review the polls pointing to the fact that Americans believe our country is headed in the wrong direction and that the president gets poor grades for his handling of key issues.  And it isn’t necessary to remind you that his honesty and trustworthiness have been questioned or that he was recently ranked the worst president since World War II.

Three businessmen in fantasyland

Under the headline, Break the Immigration Impasse, three gentlemen from the world of business took on the United States Congress in space graciously provided by The New York Times, a liberal publication always willing to bash Republicans.

“The three of us vary in our politics and would differ also in our preferences about the details of an immigration reform bill,” wrote Sheldon G. Adelson, Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, “But we could without a doubt come together to draft a bill acceptable to each of us.”  Sure you could.  Now bring in 532 other business colleagues and let’s take a look at that bill.

Keying on the defeat of Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor as the reason immigration reform became hopeless, the trio criticized the 535 members of Congress for not coming together on immigration. They wrote, “Americans deserve better than this,” adding that “Most Americans believe that our country has clear and present interest in enacting immigration legislation …”

Really?  If that were so, why did immigration rank so low when Americans were asked about the most important problems facing the country today in the Quinnipiac University poll conducted earlier this month?  Immigration garnered just four percent. Continue reading
