Don’t count “Ole Joe” out just yet

“Honey, it’s gonna be okay.” – Joe Biden

That was Vice President Joe Biden near the conclusion of his statement Wednesday, during which he stated, “I will not be a candidate” (for president). He was recalling growing up in tough times, and his parents assuring him, his brother and sister that everything was going to be okay.

Was he trying to tell voters to hang in there; I’m here if Hillary goes south?

There he stood, between President Obama and his wife, Jill, in the White House Rose Garden, taking us through his grieving process and the closing window to a realistic campaign for president.

But this political wonk believes “Ole Joe” has left that window open a crack to answer the call of the Democrat party should Hillary Clinton’s campaign sour. When a national scandal hits close to home

I’ve often wondered why people I know and meet do not seem to be as outraged as I am when it comes to the scandals emanating from the Obama administration.

One view might be that some of them have soured on politics, and see the scandals of one kind or another as common no matter what the political party.  Others are simply oblivious to the news and have become part of the low-information crowd, like the Iowa Democrats who see Hillary Clinton as honest and trustworthy.

After considerable thought, I don’t believe there is a single answer, but I wonder if it’s because they are so removed from the events that they falsely believe those scandals don’t affect them personally.  They just cannot relate to the Benghazi lies, the IRS targeting of conservative groups, the $6 billion unaccounted for in the State Department, the Lerner and Clinton e-mails, and the executive orders on illegal immigrants. A crash course analogy

After hearing one more statement or action taken by President Obama, do you feel helpless, unable to do anything about it?  Your Congressman never responds and letters to the editor only allow you to get it off your chest.  Helpless and hopeless, you feel locked out.

A friend recently sent me a copy of an analogy to this currently circulating on the Internet.

The writer* relates the harrowing 8-minute plunge of German Wings Flight 9525 in the French Alps, in which 150 innocent people met an immediate, unthinkable death.

The co-pilot Andreas Lubitz couldn’t be stopped because he had locked the pilot out of the cockpit. “It’s hard to imagine the growing feelings of fear and helplessness that the passengers felt as the unforgiving landscape rushed to meet them,“ the writer stated.

He wrote of the feeling in the pits of the stomach and hearing the shake and rattle of structures stressed beyond their limits.  And it was only near the end of the 8-minute plunge that everyone finally understood what was really happening and began to scream. Continue reading →

It’s time to take a stand on Homeland Security bill

Republicans don’t have the votes to pass its Homeland Security Bill, which calls for full funding of the agency with the exception of funding for the president’s amnesty immigration bill, putting the party in a dilemma as funding for the agency runs out on Feb. 27.

A friend wrote to me last week concerned about the Homeland Security Bill and the dubious position ahead for Republicans, including a copy of a thoughtful letter he wrote to Arizona Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake in which he asks that they consider the advice offered in Karl Rove’s Feb. 18 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.

Essentially, Rove allows that the  preliminary injunction by federal district Judge Andrew Hansen stopping the implementation of the president’s immigration executive order, gives the GOP an opportunity to extract itself.  It would give Republicans a chance to make their point  on an issue where they  agree the president overstepped his authority, while avoiding getting blamed for a shutdown.

Meanwhile, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer writes, “Republicans find themselves on the sidelines bleating plaintively about violations of the separation of powers.  But there is a way out for the GOP.  Go bold.  Go nuclear.  Abolish the filibuster.  Pass the bill and send it to the president.” Continue reading →

A look ahead to the Republican majority

Republicans are just days away from halting candidate Barack Obama’s 2008 plan to fundamentally transform the United States of America.

Republicans now hold the majority in the Senate 54-44-2 and have increased its hold in the House to 246-188.

Even though the president continues to arrogantly flaunt the possession of the veto pen, the euphoria over the GOP’s decisive mid-term win is still high.

Yes, there are those who are concerned with the split within the party between the more conservative Tea Party and traditionalists.  More importantly, however, is the concern many of us have over the ease in which Republicans compromised in the passage of the so-called “Cromnibus” spending bill.

Despite the rhetoric of Speaker John Boehner that he would vigorously oppose the president’s executive actions, the big spending bill sailed through the House and Senate, frustrating conservatives looking to the GOP majority in 2015. (aattp.org)

“We are going to fight the president tooth and nail if he continues down this path,” said Speaker John Boehner, referring to illegal amnesty, “this is the wrong way to govern.  This is exactly what the American people said on Election Day they didn’t want”

We also heard Boehner talk about how the Democrats crafted ObamaCare behind closed doors, his references to the “broken institution,” and “what our constituents want.”

“If, in fact, the president’s actions on immigration are against the Constitution and the rule-of-law,” asked the Washington Times’ Joseph Curl, “then why would the GOP cave in on the budget negotiations and actually allow them to be funded?”

Although the funding only continues through February 2015, support for the bill, in my view, validates the president’s executive action. Continue reading →

A $3,000 incentive to hire illegals

“The steps we took early on to rescue our economy and rebuild it on a new foundation helped make 2014 the strongest year for job growth since the 1990s.  All told, over a 57-month streak, our businesses have created nearly 11 million new jobs.”

President Obama opened his last press conference for 2014 with that boastful statement, and when he took questions, not a single White House correspondent challenged him on jobs or the economy, and the fact that the middle class isn’t experiencing the rosy picture he paints.

They could have queried him about the 70 million Americans who are not working, the miserable unemployment rate being experienced among Blacks, or perhaps, they could have asked him to explain the “new foundation” to which he referred.

I would have liked to have had the opportunity to ask him about the hiring of illegals.  Earlier this month it was revealed that a loophole in the Affordable Health Care Act (ObamaCare) makes the five million illegal immigrants more attractive to businesses as new hires.  Because the illegals are ineligible for ObamaCare, businesses wouldn’t be required to pay the $3,000 penalty for not providing them health coverage.
