For some reason, Fridays are slow news days, but I couldn’t help but notice a kind of incongruence in issues in one of yesterday’s news reports. Continue reading
Political Correctness
Over my morning coffee
“Is it just me or is Ted Cruz not going to let Carly talk?” – Cindy McCain
I must say, reading that quote while sipping my morning coffee was almost disastrous. Continue reading
Verizon, Ohio State University grow a spine; tradition at The Citadel challenged
How refreshing it was to hear stories of two individuals, a CEO and a university vice president, who refused to be intimidated and spoke clearly for the entities they represent. Too often we read about companies and colleges who bow to “political correctness” and the fear of a lawsuit. Continue reading
Once appealing, Trump becomes appalling
As a news wonk with journalism training, I am often struck by the words selected by headline writers. As I read the headline on Michael Gerson’s column in the paper to my editor, she said, “appealing – it should read appalling, not appealing.” Continue reading
Trump supporters – are you happy now?
Yes, I know, you’ve had it with Washington. You helped give the GOP the majority in the Senate, and they didn’t follow through with promises. Along came Donald Trump and you liked what he was saying; political correctness be damned.
I hope you’re happy now, because it appears there’s no turning back. Trump has been allowed to bully his way to several primary victories and two digit leads in most of the state primaries ahead. Continue reading
Democrats not democratic
In my Feb. 7, 2016 post, “Words have meaning,” I stated why I do not refer to that other party as the Democratic Party, because it really isn’t democratic. To me, it is the Democrat Party. I was pleased to see the editorial board of Investor’s Business Daily seems to agree, although it continues to be politically correct, and uses the official name of the party.
“The Democratic Party had better reeducate itself about the word “democratic,” IBD stated in its Feb. 10, 2016 editorial, “Is There Anything Less Democratic Than the Democratic Party?” IBD told how Hillary Clinton collected the same number of electoral college delegates (15) as Sen. Bernie Sanders, even though he crushed her 60 to 38 percent, calling it “just plain rigging.” Continue reading
Noonan’s way with words again on point
“… this is a man who knows how to break through the clutter – but crudely, seemingly off the top of his head, and using his mouth as a blunt instrument.” – Peggy Noonan
So wrote Peggy Noonan in her Saturday Wall Street Journal column, “A Rash Leader in a Grave Time,” in which she calls for a leader with a plan to avoid a Paris style attack on our soil.
In her unique way with words, Noonan wrote of Donald Trump’s plan to keep all Muslims out of this country, even those citizens returning from foreign vacations. “He doesn’t think it through, doesn’t anticipate legitimate pushback, doesn’t try to persuade, only declares.” Continue reading
A ‘must see’ monologue
From time to time Judge Jeanine Pirro delivers a truly thought-provoking opening monologue on her FOX program, “Justice With Jeanine.” Just in case you were out to dinner or missed it for some other reason last night, I have copied it to this blog for you to see and hear. Click here.… read more
Recalling two different classes
“Among the supposedly elite and powerful individuals I have met, you could crudely classify two classes; those who know who they are, and those who say, ‘don’t you know who I am?’” – Rupert Murdoch
When I read this nugget in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed by Rupert Murdoch, Chairman of News Corp, I immediately thought of two people, whose lives couldn’t be more different – Donald Trump and former President George W. Bush. Continue reading
The French know the meaning of bravery and honor
France is often the butt of jokes, especially when it comes to their military, but they stepped up and did the right thing Monday at a time when America would have dropped the ball.
Three courageous Americans and a Brit were honored in Paris yesterday as they were presented France’s highest honor for bravery for preventing a terrorist blood bath on a high speed train between Belgium and France.
None other than French President Francois Hollande presented Legion d’Honneur medals to Americans Spencer Stone, Alex Skartatos and Anthony Sadler and Briton Chris Norman at the Elysee Palace in Paris.
That was a far cry from the ordeal victims and families endured after the Nov. 5, 2009 shooting at Fort Hood. It took six years of letter-writing and even legislation to honor the 10 soldiers killed and 26 wounded with a Purple Heart, and Defense of Freedom Medals to two civilians, one who was killed and another wounded. Continue reading
